Where do old helmets go?

Post by racurley »

Getting ready to replace my old helmet. Gotten enough miles out of it and time for a new one.

I had read somewhere that you can donate your old helmets somewhere, like the fire department or something. Anyone know anything about this?

I did some reading on the subject. There are many who treat helmets like underwear--use 'em and trash 'em. Others make old helmets into table lamps or some other form of decoration. There is also a lot of opinions on the state of the shell and inside foam after the helmet ages.

But the best idea I saw was donating the old helmet to a school or homeless shelter to be distributed to a young person who is usually on a moped who can't afford good head protection. They've sunk all their money on the bike with little left over for proper gear. That's what I'll do with the several helmets I have on the shelf.

A long time ago, and now defunct... our atv group/web community had a helmet recycling program...called it "lids for kids" send them in when your child grew out of it. It ate me up to see kids riding around on sport quads with no helmets.

I understand that helmets have a life...and should be replaced...but in my opinion...OLD helmet is better than NO helmet. ALWAYS

Iv'e given them to a dealer before when trading a bike in too. strongly urging them to include in resale.

Nothing recent comes to mind though....

take it the local Harley club and try to give it to a member. My brother in law is a helmet hater. Has a bumper sticker on his bike that says so. "helmets suck"

good luck

I hope your bro-in-law never has to feel what it's like when you bounce yur noggin off the pavement. I've 'tapped" the asphalt more than once and had it not been for my helmet I'd would've had serious head injuries.

In the UK we often donate old helmets to the St John's Ambulance charity, or other training bodies so that they can practise taking the helmet off a dummy or 'victim' during training classes.

indeed, good sir. You and I both. I wont ride mine sans helmet out of first gear.

I mention it every time we visit. But its a mid 20's bravado "my head is my business" sorta deal. I understand, a little....its not something you can convince him of. But, They have two small children now, we shall see if he changes his tune. :)

My first helmet was used for spareparts (straps and so) for a forum member of another forum.
The next helmet was donated to a First Aid Education.
My last but one went back to Schuberth as I had an accident and with their mobility program you would get another one (within limited time of purchase).
So if I have to replace my current one it's probably going to a First Aid education too.

My old BMW helmet is in the garage should someone ever be wanting a one-off lift. It's still usable IMHO. SWMBO has her own helmet.
