Electrical woes

Post by cgguy09 »

Hey team,
So, I managed to figure out my weird turn & transmission woes...but the fun doesn't stop.

So After I got my new transmission put on, I noticed my right blinker (signal if you're from the North East) didn't work...I chocked it up to a bad connection. I pulled the signal out and it looks good. But I'm going to "break it open" and see if I can clean it off on the inside. I've read a lot of people just cut the rubber and spray it with WD-40...but I know that stuff isn't for electrical connections.
That's all and good BUT THEN TONIGHT.............
...out of nowhere, my speedo stopped working....WTF?!?!

I cleaned off both the from and the rear ABS...I'm pretty sure the speedo is related to them (because it's an ABS bike). both looked good and I'm getting no ABS light issues.

My plan is to pull the battery tomorrow and let it sit for a few minutes to see if that resets anything.

What could I be missing? The wire harness looks good, it doesn't seem to be rubbing on anything....But who know, maybe it's not sitting right after my tranny operation. (pun intended).

Oh and to be clear....
it's the blinker switch that believe is the problem.
The hazard lights work and the all the blinkers actually light up.

Also, the tach and the clock work just fine

having trouble picturing where pulling the tranny collides with the speedo, or signals..... i didnt touch any of that stuff.. to be fair, I had already removed the guts of the abs though..... i am not certain theyre related. If they were, youd be getting a big fat ABS error on your dash.

everything else work? neutral, check engine... bezel lights? (edit, see you answered that)

forgot, are you a Rockster or plain 1150 guy-it matters, due to speedo setup. On the plain ole 1150 I believe, it is NOT through the ABS, it comes from the front tire. Rockster is different, and speed is fed to speedometer through abs? i know my 1150 is simple front wheel speedo.

I had my own troubles when I did the trans.... was just a plug to the kickstand switch.

you have to have inadvertently jarred something loose or something like that... or the speedometer drive is fouled up inside...

I'm on an ABS rockster.
Everything else but the blinker and the speedo appear good. I'm thinking I maybe pinched/pulled something in the electrical central nervous system.
I'm going to lift up the subframe and make sure the trail of wires is as it should be!

Check continuity for the blue/yellow speedometer signal wire, from iABS connector (pin 38) and corresponding terminal on back of speedometer.
My guess is broken harness wire(s) in forward portion of bike.

Similar wire harness check for turn signal switch requires opening up the handswitch module (L or R).
I have a spare handswitch module and can dig out a microswitch in case you need one.

Wiring is weakness for the R1150** bikes. Here in R1150R.org you can find info about under-tank wire harness wear spots & damage, plus wire failures within the harnesses for switchgear and instruments.

OK yeah if youre rockster with abs. My knowledge isnt helpful. LOL its different.

there is a thread here...is it you sweatmark...where you REMOVED the abs? VERY detailed about the journey to getting the speedo back on an ABS rockster.

see above, check those ever so tight zip ties where the harness goes up to the bars.

Found it,
There was an area where the loom should move around and looked like it was being pinched. It seems it got caught on the frame and was tearing...of course as luck would have it, 2 of the three wires torn are the same color scheme...so I'll need to do a little trial an error to fix it.

Thanks for the help team!

Give me some details about effected wiring (location of wire breaks, connected systems) and I can help with wire color codes from the SLP cd-rom.

Three wires were cut... (1)Blue wire with a yellow stripe, (2) Blue wire with a yellow stripe, (3) grey wire with a black stripe.

The location is the loom just forward of the ABS system on the left side of the bike. As per Clymers BMW uses a Blue wire with a yellow stripe on both the right turn signal button and the speed-o.

Thanks for the help!
