I feel your pain. Take heart you're not filling up an SUV. Thats about a 70 dollar tab.

We are up to $1.30 per litre of premium and about $1.20 unleaded petrol.
The positives are that the proliferation of these ridiculous sized 4WDs that only ever see the wilds of inner urban areas will be stemmed.
It has got to be hurting some people as the price was only 90-98c litre less than 6 months ago.

We have a large offshore oil field in Bass Strait, but we still pay world parity prices........plus of course the obligatory taxes!!! :roll:

oh stop whinging..

we're currently paying around 92.9pence per litre here (that's what i paid this morning).

that's about £15-£17 UK for a fill up of roughly 160 miles (guessing here).

From the FT Currency Converter.... : .929 UK Sterling = 1.69 US Dollar

or... 15 UK Sterling = 27.22 US Dollar

Fuel Prices

Yesterday I filled my F150 with regular and the tab was $50.00 ouch! I don't use my truck much since I got my Roadster and at this rate I will use it even less.

F150 = 15 MPG city

R1150R = 38 MPG city

I love my Roadster for so many reasons and this simply adds to the enjoyment.

most definitely why my R1150R will be getting its use for the late summer and fall here! I'll ride to work and back everyday until it snows and even then I might consider studded ice tires! :D

My work truck is a 2500HD Chevy 4WD with an 8.1 litre gas burner.
10mpg downhill with a tailwind and engine shut off. I drive on average 1000 miles per week.

You do the math.

Wish I could carry the tools and equipment I need every day on my R.

Heck...take one of those large SUI's with the 36 gallon tank and Premium and that is just shy of the $100 bill.......

Gas here today, is 2.44 (87), 2.54 (89) and 269 (91)........ :roll: :roll:

Is it OK to use 89 octane gas rather than premium?

Thank God I ride my bike more than my car (summer anyway!)
I paid as high as CAD$ 1.13 per litre (that's a whopping 5.13 CAD$/imperial gallon) for 91 OCT fuel.

I usually fill up once the fuel light comes on - which translates to an average fill of ~ 13-15 liters. This is insane. Would I stop riding if the price doubled? NO!!

I ride by those people in the SUV's and think......."man I can take my wife away for a weekend bike trip for what they pay to fill their tanks to go across town!"

Get used to it boys. If anyone has any wild dreams of gas prices going down, ever, again then roll over and hit the snooze button, catch some more zzzzzz's and dream on. I dont think it will ever happen. Big oil has been trying to raise our prices for yrs and make it stick. Looks like they achieved the goal. Heck, worldwide fuel prices have always been 2x or better what we've paid in the states for years. Now, if only everyone rode a motorcycle to work and school, for errands etc, the roads would be a bit safer for us who choose to ride.

Given the recent spike in fuel prices, riding our Roadsters/Rocksters instead of our cars seems (on the surface at least) to be a viable and cost saving alternative. Heck, it seemed logical to me.

....then I did the math.

Here's the cost comparisons of driving a year or 10,000 miles in each of my Altima and my R1150R; both being 2002 models.

2002 Altima
============
$893 :87 Octane fuel @ $2.50/ gal
$30 :3 oil changes (DIY)
$10 :Air filter
$800 :Full coverage Insurance
$50 :20% of a $300 set of 50k mile tires
$750 :Depreciation
-------
$2533 TOTAL Cost of 1yr's operation

2002 BMW R1150R
==============
$589 :89 Octane fuel @ 2.65/gal
$40 :3 oil changes (dino, diy, non bmw filter)
$20 :Air filter
$500 :Full coverage insurance
$300 :1 Set of Tires
$500 :Depreciation
$300 :Safety related gear: clothing, helmets, boots, gloves (c'mon, fess up!)
-------
$2249 TOTAL Cost of 1yr's operation

Savings: 11.2%

It's actually cheapest to drive the 97 Saturn, but that comparison would be unfair since it is almost fully depreciated at this point. For me at least, gasoline -even at today's prices- accounts for only 1/4 of my TCO in a year.

Yes, I will whine at the gas station!!

...but only a little bit.

Yeah, in this age of $17k motorcycles, I laugh when I hear non-riders speculate it would be cheaper to operate a motorcycle compared to a car. Even for commuting, the difference is a wash. Plus no car has ever made me want to drive for no reason as often as I want to ride for no reason. Perhaps a Lamborghini Gallardo would make me want to drive for no reason at all, but that's an unrealistic comparison for most of us whose last name isn't "Gates."

Daslimpet, very interesting comparison. Now, if my 94 exploder that I keep for rainy weather, and my off road excursions, yeah I actually know how to put mine in 4wd, would only get the milage that your altima does, commuting to work wouldnt be as cost efficient on the bike as it is for me. But at darn near 3 times the mpg advantage the r1150 holds over that old suv, I'll stick to the fun, fast and freedom on my bike.

In case you forgot, BMW makes cars to. If you've never driven one do your self a BIG favor, go down to your local dealer and try one. Many a time i've taken my 330ci down to the hocking hills area and wrung her out on the backroads. Trust me, even going to the grocery store is fun! :wink:
