Tall seat for r1150r
hi,
i just bought a 2002 r1150r. it has the standard seat on it but i've learned bmw makes a tall seat as well. the bike is comfortable for me as is so far although i have not had it on a long ride yet. i'm 6'4" and i was wondering if anyone has had experience with the tall seat. also, any feelings about other seats for the bike? thanks in advance! jason

Once you ride long enough you will hate the OEM seat and the person who designed it....I tried the tall seat, but I didn't like it.
I got the Sargant seat. Its a little taller and wider than the original. Its also hard, meaning do not expect La-Z-Boy comfort. But its pretty good for 300 miles day rides.

For that vintage R1150R, and through the '05 at least, there should be 3 seats available. I have the middle height seat, then there is a taller one than that. 780mm, 820mm, 850mm?? check me on those numbers, I'm recalling these from 2 years ago. I personally love the middle height seat, it's comfortable enough for me to do 500 mile days, which is farther than my disc-challenged neck will allow.

I'm 6'4" and was looking into footpeg lowering kits but went for the tall seat instead....I'm glad I did...that was 3yrs ago...I'm very happy with the tall seat now....just do it....btw...(the Rockster comes with the tall seat and some of the guys that ride them are short-arses and bought themselves a low/standard seat...and might sell the original tall seat cheap).

If you're over 6' tall, I can't see how your legs can stand the stock seat for more than a hundred miles. At 5'10", I have both the stock and tall saddle for my Roadster. My stock seat has broken in enough to where it no longer hurts my butt, but my legs still complain. There are no pressure points with the stock seat because there are no discernable ridge lines on it. The tall seat makes my legs happy but the ridge lines (where the seat goes from a horizontal plan to a downward plane) give my skin a rash after a thousand mile ride.
In the summer, I prefer the stock seat. In the winter where my legs are likely to cramp during a long ride, I prefer the tall seat.

tall seat
I am only 5'9" (and shrinking daily
) and like the stock seat from a feet on the ground perspective. But I have discovered that on long rides, my old catcher's knees beg me to stop much more than my butt. I am going to get a Sargent's which is taller and perhaps do their $85 modification to narrow the front for easier staddling.
At your height, I don't know how your knees can stand the stock seat height!

I had a custom Bill Mayer Saddle made for mine. Had him make it taller than the stock seat as well as molding it to fit my riding position. I've heard nothing but good from the guys who buy Sargents, Russells or Corbins, but they are basically one size fits all, unless you pay extra to tweak it. Not so when you go with a custom seat maker. Thats what they are all about, customizing the saddle to fit the purchaser. Im very satisfied with my BMS.

thanks for all the responses.
wow, thanks for all the info, super helpful! so i just bought the bike less than a week ago and next weekend i'll have my first chance at a 300 mile day. so far, i've just ridden it around town. for the past 4 years i've been riding a '73 r60 /5 and my legs have always been pretty comfortable on long rides but the seat becomes unbearable after a couple hundred miles. the r1150r was immediately more comfortable for a lot of reasons but one big difference between my old bike and the r1150r is the leg room. my legs were actually a bit more extended on the /5. being used to the old bench seat on the /5, hopefully i can handle the seat on the r1150r but i was thinking of getting a taller seat for leg room. also, someone mentioned lowering the pegs. i'm def going to research that as well as the corbin and other seats. thanks again for all the input!!! jason
seat height
Another item that can be considered is the use of one of Alaskan Leathers sheepskin buttpads. They're about $50. It raises you about a half inch and is super comfortable. I run one on the stock low seat, and it's then as comfortable as the taller, thicker middle seat, but not quite as tall. Then, I add it to the middle height seat to get maximum comfort and maximum leg room, and between both seats and putting the sheepskin on or not, I have lots of combinations depending on the ride.

I bought mine in March of 2002, and immediately bought the tall seat.
It just adds 1.5" or so of foam. I am 6'3", 200 lbs., skinny butt. I have done 300 mile days regularly, and a few 400, 500, and 600, total of 35,000 miles so far.
It works fine for me, when I start to get sore, I get off for 15 minutes. But it cost $175, half the cost of a custom, which would be better.

Ditto that. The OEM seat sucks (for me, anyway), and the Sargent was the answer. The Sargent has been great on 500 mile days. And it is a taller seat than the OEM. Its also a bit wider which has the effect of a taller seat in terms of your feet touching the ground. I'm 6'0" with a 32" inseam and, with the Sargent, my feet are comfortably flat footed on the ground.Momo wrote:Once you ride long enough you will hate the OEM seat and the person who designed it....I tried the tall seat, but I didn't like it.

save yourself some grief when you order the tall seat and order a sargent seat. They are taller than your original, cost more than the tall seat, but are worth the extra dollars as they are very very comfortable for longer trips. And you will take longer trips because the R1150R with a small vario windscreen is a very good touring bike.
