Gloves

Post by johnt650 »

I posted this on the RT forum as well, needing to buy a new pair of gloves for general riding and would like to know of experience with either the Held Steve glove or the Lee Parks Deer Sports. Thanks

Held Steve is outstanding - I don't wear them in the Summer here but at all other times they are my glove of choice - the Kangaroo skin molds to your hand great and they are of very high quality construction.

Can't speak to the ones you mention (I'm kind of partial to First Gear) - but I can tell you that the First Gear Master Glove is a real nice glove for riding those summer rain storms. They are light and they work.

My Held Steve gloves are my first choice to put on. I've had mine over a year and even crashed in them last July (The gloves and my Cruiserworks boots are the two items that did not need replacing - the rivets on the palms are worn shiny from sliding on pavement).

They are a BIT warm for very hot weather and a BIT chilly for very cold weather, but they are just a great pair of gloves.

I really like my Steve Held gloves, wore them out in 2 years. Perfect for LA, I wore them 12 months a year, the heated grips / with the thin Roo skin just perfect for our winters here. I'll be picking up another pair soon.

I have been hapy with my Roadgear deerskin gloves. I have had them for a year and have worn them in temps between 40F and 95F. My knuckles were a little chilly at 40F this morning, but the heated grips kept everything tolerable. When it was 95F this summer, my gloves/hands were nowhere nearly as hot as everything else.

Just bought a pair Held Steves for winter riding (N. Texas) from newenough.com. I bought them because the Held Summer Fresh mesh gloves are fantastic. I've put a couple hundred miles on them, and the Steves are wonderful gloves, but make sure if you buy online that you are sized okay. I think the Steves may come a bit large (not sure of this, though). The newenough.com web site gives you directions for measureing your hand. If you measure 8.5" to 9", then they recommend a size 9. I measured out at 8 3/4, but the size 9 pair I ordered seems a bit big. I may exchange them for 8 1/2, but the 8 1/2 in the Held Summer Fresh gloves that I tried in the dealership were pretty darn small, so I expect size 9 is the way to go. I'm still checking them out.

The problem is so few places carry Held gloves that its hard to try on several pair.

For kbc68: what size are your gloves? How well do they fit? By that, I mean specifically the thumb portion of the glove. Did you buy after you tried them on, or did you buy online? I you bought online, how did you determine the right size?

Held Steve gloves are outstanding. They are comfortable and well made, and provide good protection. They are my two season gloves for where I live. I wear them mainly in the Spring and Fall. I wore them today to work. The temp was 48 deg F this morning, and should be in the 60's when I leave work.

I can still use the buttons on my XM Roady 2 sat radio with the Held gloves.

For the summer, I wear BMW mesh Air Flow gloves.

For the winter, I wear BMW ComfortTemp gloves, which protect from water and wind

Lee Parks...

Post by dallara »

I have had a ton of gloves in the 35 years I have been riding. It has been a long, long time since I had any Held's, so I won't comment there.

But, I have had a pair of Lee Parks Deerskins for a year now, and in my opinion they are simply the best street gloves I have ever owned... By far.

Up until these my all-time favorites were a pair of Treen Custom Leathers Deerskins (no longer produced), but by far and away the Lee Parks are as good or better, and so much better to me than any other brand glove that I doubt I will ever buy anything else...

Just my two cents... YMMV.

Cheers!

Anyone on here have any experience with Thurlow deerskin gloves?
I always wanted a pair but never got around to it. I guess they're still being made?

gloves

Darth (Dave) - I have two sets of Thurlow gloves. The newest is at least 5 years old and the oldest, I wore nearly year round for several years and would still be servicable. They are comfortable, dry soft and hold up well (obviously). The only downfall in my opinion, is there is no extra proptection in the palm or on the fingers and knuckles. That is why I changed. Now using the deerskin/elkskin gauntlet from Aerostich and am happy, except the black bleeds on you.

rdsmith3 (Bob) - Are the BMW ComfortTemp gloves the phase change material? If so, do they actually work with the heated grips to warm your fingers and the backs of your hands? I would like to know before I invest, since they cost as much as electric gloves!

Thanks.

The gloves are very warm, but to be honest, I do not have another pair of winter gloves to compare them to. So I can't say they are better than brand X. I do know they are warmer than my uninsulated Held gloves.

They are a bit bulky, and I cannot accurately hit the buttons on my XM Roady 2, but those are very small buttons.

How cold does it get where you are, vann?

I have both the Held "Steve" gloves and two sets of Thurlow gloves. All are excellent. My "winter gloves are the Helds and my summer gloves (perforated and non- perforated deerskin) are the Thurlows. The Thurlow shop is about 4 blocks from my office. On both occassions I walked in picked up a pair of gloves, had them custom fit to my hands and was out the door in 30 minutes. They are supple, extremely comfortable, and breathe very well and they fit like a ...well, a glove!
I've had my Held gloves for 5 years and they still look almost new.

I'm considering the Held 'Steve' and 'Summer Fresh'

For those that have used the 'Steve' model...

Do they offer any degree rain protection? I gather they are not waterproof, but wondering if they get noticably wet or thouroughly/uncomfortably soaked in the event of heavy rain.

Disclosure: I have the full aeroflow touring screen and GS handguards, so your milage will almost certainly vary.

I rode mine in the rain for about 200 miles a few weekends back. My hands were dry the whole time. I would imagine that even on a bike less protected than mine, they'd be ok. The Held "Steve" Gloves come with a "rain swipe" on the left index finger. This would lead me to believe that the gloves should be ok in the rain.

I don't know.

The last time I got caught in the rain I was wearing the mesh gloves. They were totally soaked. A treatment of Lexol kept the leather soft and pliable, however.

I have had a pair of Held Steve gloves for the past 2 1/2 years and have about 32,000 miles on them. They are holding up very well. I also bought a pair of Lee Parks touring gloves in tan for summer riding. The Parks are a bit cooler than the Helds. The Helds fit my hand better than the Parks and I think both are great gloves. The Kangaroo skin palms on the Helds have these tiny pockets, no skip that. The kangaroo Helds form nicely to my hands and are thin enough to give lot's of feel and dexterity. I would rank the Helds first and the Parks second in comfort and quality. I have two other pair of Held gloves, the summer rain glove and a cold weather insulated goretex glove, they are all terrific gloves, but the Held Steve's are my favorite.
