Shield fasteners
I thought I posted this earlier this morning but I can't find it; if it comes up as a repeat please forgive me. Anyway, does anybody have a junked touring or sport shield and have fasteners to spare? I lost one grommet/bolt/washer but I have to buy the whole set for $25 from BMW. Has anybody found any other types of fasteners that will also work? Thank you, Sarah

You can get the rubber "well nuts" in the size you need from Desmoparts. Try this page at:
http://www.desmoparts.com/ducati/wellnut/wellnut.htm
I can't remember what size you need, but the ones here are priced from only $1.25 to $1.50 each, and that includes shipping!
Desmoparts shoould have the screws you need, as well.
Hope this helps!
Cheers!

You have to be careful of the depth (or height) of the well nuts for the BMW touring screen, and maybe the sport screen. When I bought my touring screen, new, it came with three "long" well nuts that were the correct size, and one "short" well nut that was the wrong size. Even though I bought my screen from Chicago BMW, my local dealer (now out of business) graciously gave me the correct well nut for free.
The short one will not expand at a great enough depth in the hole to secure the wind screen. In other words, it just pops out.
The parts manager at the dealer told me that if you buy the package of four from BMW, they are the right size, but if you buy individual ones, they can be the wrong size. He implied that it is a real BMW fubar situation -- they frequently mix up the well nuts.
I don't have one handy to measure.
I have often thought that the well nut approach is a deficient way of fastening these screens, but my understanding is that the screen is supposed to pop off if there is an accident. However, the fly screen just uses normal bolts with nuts.

Just for the record...

I don't know about anyone else's, but my BMW flyscreen uses four rubber well-nuts with large cap-head torx screws. The well-nuts are the "longer" type, and cinch my flyscreen up fine... Never had it pop off.
My BMW "new" type tall windscreen (which can be seen in a pic in both the Staintune collector box thread and a recent windscreen thread), however, uses a smaller head torx cap-screw, but with larger bolt-thread diameter, large semi-captured stainless formed washers, large rubber grommets that are actually fitted into the windscreen, and the screws cinching down in threaded post bosses welded up as part of the winscreen bracket. It is kind of an ingenius design, as it will still allow the windscreen to be pushed away in the event of an impact, yet there is absolutely no way it can just "pop off"...
I still use both screens, depending on what kind of riding I'm doing.
Cheers!
