I don't think there's any retrofitting of the jump starter studs -- you've either got 'em or you haven't. I think it was an enhancement that was brought in with the twin-spark motors. My dealer pointed them out to me when I took delivery of my Rockster, I think it's the kind of neat detail that makes Beemers just that little bit different!

Battery Tender Plus
I have the Battery Tender Plus and it says its good for GEL batteries.
So why, Battery Advice Guy, are you saying this is a no go?

Battery Tender/Deltran, in early 2004, claimed their Battery tender Plus was usable with gel batteries then in existence.
BMW contracted Exide to make a gel battery for the BMW R259 line of engines (twin spark oilheads) that has a different chemistry than other gel cells sold at the time.
For a period of time in 2004, there was confusion between Deltran, BMW, dealers and especially users about which tenders worked well and which damaged the battery chemistry.
My post, which is not scientific nor official, reflects my conclusions after studying the issue during late 2004-early 2005.
In short: most BT+ charge to a significantly higher initial voltage than is 'good' for the gel chemistry of the BMW branded Exides. Can be used but will effect overall battery life.
BT Jr and the BMW special charger limit the initial charge voltage enough to do the job without damaging the battery chemistry.
The reason the alternator doesn't matter is because it is always delivering a smaller peak voltage than the trickle chargers do.

I have used my standard BT on my gel cell with no problems.
They could have easily changed the charging regimen without
changing alternators.
