1150R shut off at intersection

1150R shut off at intersection
This is for a 2002 R1150R. Stopped at an intersection and the bike shut off. It will turn over and all the lights come on, but either is not getting spark, or no fuel. Any troubleshooting suggestions?

Cut out non start
Firstly you need to find out whether it's fuel supply related or engine management.Basically the system splits into two distinct parts - fuel supply comprises the electric pump (in the tank) and it's fuse and the relay that operates it. Engine management comprises the fuel injection and ignition systems. Do you have sufficient fuel in the tank? You'd be amazed at the number of people who make that simple mistake! Assuming you do, open the filler cap and turn on the ignition - do you
hear the fuel pump prime up (a buzzing noise)? If not then it's a fuel
supply problem and you will need to check through the system.First go to the underseat fuse/relay box and check the fuel pump fuse. There is an excellent illustration of which fuse/relay is which in the technical info section on this very site.If the fuse is ok then the relay can be checked by simple substitution, that is swop it for, say, the lighting relay.I don't have a manual in front of me while I write this so forgive me if I'm a little vague on details but the stand switch probably operates by removing the earth path to the relay.
If you have fuel in the tank and can hear the pump running then you have a management problem which will need further investigation (and I will need to have a manual handy to help you through it!) Simon.

If I recall correctly, the bike will power up and crank over in gear with the sidestand down. As soon as you pull the stand up or put the bike into N, you'll hear the fuel pump run for a second or two. You can check for spark by unscrewing the plugs, plugging them into the leads and laying them on top of the cylinders, MAKING SURE that the spark plugs are firmly in contact with cylinder metal. If you have no spark, it could be the sidestand cutout switch, the coil, or possibly the Hall sensor. It might be worth visiting your local dealer and have them hook the diagnostic computer up. Might save some time. Good luck!

Right if both plugs are sparking and you can hear the pump running then you need to check for injector switching. You can do this with a "noid" light plgged into the wiring socket on one of the injectors or an "led" type test light. Failing that then you should be able to hear the injector pulse, place the blade of a longish screwdriver against the injector and put your ear to the handle (you are using it as a stethescope - the way a Doctor listens to your chest) crank the engine over and you should hear a regular "ticking" sound as the injector switches.
If you have pump run, spark at the plugs and injector switching then the mangement side checks out - so your problem has to be a wierd one. I have known "in tank" problems that will give you these symptoms. The early "K" series bikes used to split fuel filters so the pump (instead of filling the fuel lines to the injectors) merely re-circulated the fuel around inside the tank! It's possible for a fuel hose to come adrift inside the tank so although everything is working as it should no fuel is actually being delivered. Let us know how you get on. Cheers Simon

Good guess. It could also be that the fuel line quick-disconnects (red circle) aren't fully connected anymore. There's a flow inhibitor mechanism built into them, at least the supply line, that stops fuel flow if the QDs aren't fully connected. I would try disconnecting them, check whether they look clean inside, then lubricate the O-rings with some saliva and very carefully push them together again, taking great care not to pinch the O-rings. While you're in there, check also whether the fuel pump wiring harness (yellow circle) is free from moisture and corrosion, and then firmly reconnect it. It's probably fine, since you can hear the fuel pump whine when you turn the ignition on.

I've just had some of the wiring replaced under warenty on my 03. The wires that come down from the handle bar swich units are known to have problems if the factory has badly installed them. I got some very strange problems before the whole thing shut down. Cranking without firing, shutting down when turning right, start button dead, indecators not canceling. So I would have a look in that area.

Last night I disconnected the fuel lines and each had fuel in them. I then checked the right side injector connection with a light and it lit when I hit the switch. I moved to the left side and when I put the light on it, the bike tried to start, so disconnecting either the fuel lines or the right injector connection may have done something. The battery needs to be charged before I do much else and I will not be able to get back to it until the weekend when I plan to start on my 24k mile service and will change out the fuel filter and charge the battery. Thanks for all the suggestions thus far and will do a follow-up next week.
