Plates?

Post by Guest »

Round where I live the slang is:

Plates = Feet (plates of meat)

Trouble = Wife (Trouble and Strife)

I am getting confused

Yes, I know - yours is the correct rhyming slang, the proper Co-ck-ney version. "Plates" meaning "wife" is a bizarre bastardised version which I first heard about 4 or 5 years ago in, of all places, Cheltenham, where it was quite widely used. Incorrectly I thought, and I said just the same as you did. But it appealed to me because it didn't even rhyme properly and I call my wife all sorts of weird stuff anyway.
