R1150R with Hannigan Fairing

Here's the test fit-up of the Hannigan Fairing on my R-R. This pic shows the Sport shield. I'll try to upload the touring shield pic as well. Check out the GS footpegs and rear suspension...

Hannigan fairings have been around a long time but that is the first time I have seen them on a Roadster. Jesse Bags too. So when you leaving on a cross-country trip to check it all out?

They are Al Jesse bags. They are most often seen on GS bikes, but he has an installation kit for the R as well. I was not satisfied with them until I raised the rear suspension. The ground clearance was insufficient. The alternative would have been to redesign the Jesse mounts to raise the bags about 3 inches, but I had other reasons for wanting the GS suspension so I went that route.

I have gotten some cross-eyed looks from some of the R-R crowd, but I had plans to make my R-R into a long distance bike from the start. I just didn't like the current touring offerings from BMW (RT and LT). I know it takes the R away from it's design mission, but I think this will work for me. My old R100RT has been from Georgia to Washington state and as far as Labrador. I took it to Nova Scotia every year. This one will see similar duty, plus I hope it sees Prudoe Bay one day. I have been on some extended gravel road tours in upper Canada where the suspension travel and tough construction are necessary. The Hannigan is hand laid fiberglass vs. the injection molded plastic of the factory tourers. Jesse's are considerably tougher than the BMW luggage. I have the handlebar / footpeg ergos set for 20 hour days with the Wunderlich bars and GS footpeg brackets. Next up (after installing the electronic gadgetry) is a five gallon fuel cell on a custom rear rack.

The lines will match the bike better once I (cover your ears) remove the silly beak and install a proper K1200RS front fender. The lines of the Jesse bags don't match anything but an H1 Hummer, but they work well. Much better than "pretty" bags.

Does that mean that when I install the 5 gallon fuel cell and rear rack that I'll have to put bricks in the fairing to keep from popping wheelies?

beemerphile - While I know some of the comments are related to the looks of the bike, I would say, if you are indeed rigging it for a long distance bike, the final product, while not as sleek as most Roadsters, will certainly look much better than a GS while functioning at least as good!

And I had the hots for a Hanningan years ago before I got my RS. Used to be an option for the hardcore rider. It appears you qualify!

Its only purpose is to travel extreme distances with reliability and comfort. I am not worried about the "lines". I had considered a GS, but none of the touring shields completely eliminate helmet buffeting at speed. Having your head knocked around for successive 1,000 mile days is not my idea of fun. The only sure elimination for buffeting is a full fairing. This bike will provide the rugged spacious luggage, relaxed ergonomics, ground clearance, and suspension travel of the GS but will allow a full fairing. The extreme knee-bend of the R1150R won't make it on the long road.

I have ridden BMW's over 300,000 miles in 29 years. I have wanted a Hannigan the entire 29 years. I finally have enough money for the Hannigan end enough time to enjoy it. Jerry Heil, the owner of Hannigan Fairing Co. has been great to work with.

beemerphile, I love looking at it. I think the Hannigan is great. I saw one live in Ohio last year on a R and frankly, looks way better to me than a RT or a GS. Has a real heritage look to them. And I'd keep the fat beak to go with the fat fairing, the one in Ohio had a flat fender on it and it looked a bit off.

Most of all, I heard they function beautifully.

As for the comedians on this site, they, like most, confuse beauty with familiarity. They forget that our R looks funny to many motorcyclists out there, especially cruiser riders. Maybe they look funny too?

Congrat on a great job overall.

..oh, but do stick to the sport shield, the touring shield is way too large, ruins the look.

Of course if you don't care about those things, than I'll just shut up!
