Hey DJ, thanks for the inspiration! It looks and sounds great.
Ferro, yep it's 1 3/4". I just happened to have a suitable piece attached to the workshop vac which I, ahem, liberated...as my local auto parts boy racer store only stocks tips around the 3" dia mark. I drilled and tapped the cat stub to take an M5 set screw and bolted it on.
As for leaner I've no idea. Judging by the comments from others who've done this it makes no difference as the motronic compensates by altering the mixture anyway.

Thanks for the thanks guys.

Every time people would ask about aftermarket cans..just because they want a better sound..I would think..geees..about $700..and this costs next to nothing.

I'm glad you guys are enjoying the better sound...I love the deep sound at idle..and the nice growl when you give it some stick..without being too loud.

I ride around town alot..when I see pedestrians about to step onto the road ahead..I can give it a blip and they look up knowing it's a bike coming.

Some like the look..some don't...some like the sound..some don't.

But at least you can just put the can back on..and it doesn't take long to do it.

I want city lids next..city lids on an already half size left case just didn't seem worth it before..I don't use my cases much because I like to lane split.

You have to agree..two cases the same size makes more sence..and looks way better.. :D

Powerflow or Borla?

Post by ferroknight »

Just picked up a dual resonator tip to screw on after can removal, but single slash cut looks better.

I remember seeing roadster pics on board with dual underseat exhaust, a la R1100S. Too bad I couldn't go to a local muffler shop and have a pipe routed to a can underneath.

Thought I'd have a nice relaxing Sunday with no tools or projects...but now I MUST try this before my morning ride and see for myself...(maybe scare a few Grizzlies back into the hills and away from town...)..

Thanks for the inspiration...I guess e-bay is going to be full of "half side left bags", and short on "full size left bags"??

I'll let you know how it goes...

Did it...THANKS

Post by Rockiesrider »

OK...went to the garage with my new 'curved and slash cut' end I picked up at Canadian tire for 10$, took off the can in 2 minutes, turned the guard around (thanks for the tip there), and WOW....looks great, sounds "grrrreat"...

And does anyoune have a full size left bag out there??

You guys are a fine bunch as far as advice and help goes, and I don't need to post a picture, as you just have to look at Taosport's picture to see exactly what it looks like...

Thanks again...

OK, we had to try this also...

Here's my hottie wife's Roadster, sans exhaust can - we found the stainless steel exhaust tip at AutoZone for $10.

I took my can off this weekend and I have a question for my fellow waggoneers. Are you guys having as hard a time as me keeping yourself from blipping the throttle at stoplights. I feel like a Harley guy. I just love the way it sounds now. My fuel economy is gonna go to crap now.

I know what you mean....the tempation to blip is just too great. I park in a parkade downtown and it is a whole different thing starting up the rock in there....just way too much fun.

I've checked mime after hours of riding in stinking hot weather...and they're not even warm...it's not a problem.

Sweatmark's new tip looks great...I might look for one just like it.. :smt023

I had one just like it for years (almost like it) but I found that after a few days I got little pepper size dots on the side of the rear wheel..mostly caused by cold starts and moisture or condensation in the cat...and when I used a slightly bent tip that angles the exhaust out more away from the wheel the little dots stoped...see my pic...just a thought...anyone else getting the tiny spots?

Thanks for the input on the cases...

As for tips...I opted for the turned away one, but the best part of this upgrade, is that for $10 a tip, we can try any option we want...

I had the 'dots' on another project bike with a straight, short exhaust, and they were from the condensation, etc...spitting on the wheel, then picking up dust and dirt on the spit marks...so , yes, it looked like little specs of pepper, but it always just wiped off the chrome rim..

Scared...

Post by ferroknight »

I'm scared to bob my exhaust, like the first time I shaved my head clean. Oh, someone hold my hand while I do this for moral comfort.

Anyway, I wish someone could post a sound file to hear what your can-less exhausts sound like now. Did any of you require the fitment of new exhaust gaskets?

the only thing holding the can on, is Two ( 2 ) screws/ bolts if you don't like it it can easily be put back on! Unlike your hair you have to wait a few month for it to grow back! LOL! the sound is absolutely awesome!
if you don't care for it It'll take you 3-5 minutes to put it back on!

COME ON!!! ALL THE COOL KIDS ARE DOING IT!

Yeah but we're all on different continents so no one will notice! :D I've still only seen one other RR on the road in the UK as yet. Admittedly I haven't ridden everywhere yet but when I got my new CBR6 years ago I had a problem finding which black one was mine the first time I went to Devils Bridge on it!
Ferro, like rearro said you can put it back in a flash. You don't even need to buy a tip, just ride round with the can off and see if you like it. If not, put it back on. No gaskets needed.

I, too, bit the bullet last night and became can-off lemming. I have to say...this is probably the coolest thing you can do to one of these scoots for under $10. I was particularly motivated by Michael's method of flipping the "cover thingy". In fact - I'll admit it - I copied him exactly. Same tip and everything. Very easy to pull off, and it looks great. And it is very nice to hear a little more of the engine.

Did anyone else notice an odd smell after running the bike the first time with the can off?

At any rate - good job folks. I just couldn't wait to go pick up a tip yesterday after work and give it a try.

The only downside? There will probably be a rush to find a full-size left bag. I'll probably have to wait on that one...
