The can is off!

I had a Two Brothers system (that was falling apart so i took it off)and it was loud, REAL loud for a BMW, but very cool sounding. Sort of like an airplane and a pissed off VW Beetle had a foracious one night stand. My rockster definately had more power sans can and cat...but it was like the powerband moved up the rev range a bit as well. Was continuously bouncing off the rev limiter. Also seemed to add a few mph to the top end, up to about 133-134mph (speedo indicated, on flat ground with premium fuel)
Now i have the cat back on, but with a Staintune can. Way too quiet, and I hate the looks of that golden brown ripplesided cat. But it sounds better than with the stock can on. Also seems to have slightly more ooomph that with totally stock exhaust...but if so....not by much.

so my can has been off for a couple of months now, and I am completely happy with it. Personally, I love the sound and it's still WAY more quiet than my friends HD's and metric cruisers (thank god). The biggest change though was the weight loss, after ditching the can, the bike almost felt unbalanced at first. I am amazed everytime I move the can at how heavy it is. Now I have gotten used to it and will not go back to stock. The only possibility is a Remus + Y-pipe system if I ever feel like parting with nearly $1000.

Interesting thread.
Been thinking about doing the same thing - BUT - I currently run a Remus Y-piece and Revolution can (with a non-baffling baffle.
).
Has anyone ridden a bike with both setups?? (ie with stock cat & no can; compared to Remus y-piece & can?).
Be interested to see which is louder/better performance.
(also interested in the luggage capacity gains.
)

If I can find a cheap extension over the weekend I'll swap it over.
The cost implications are irrelevant for me - I had the Remus from the previous bike and bought it with the bike so it's not like I'm going to "save" any money. But if I can "do my bit" for the environment with the catalyst I'd like to.
(My Remus y-piece is a little the worse for wear anyway - the centre-stand catch bracket has fallen off and one of the mounting bracket sides has broken

I just popped my can off. Took under 7 minutes (once I found the right size socket, wrench). It's pouring rain here...won't get a chance to road test for awhile. I don't think it's too loud at idle. I posted a message today re: a Remus system. I may give this "no can" set-up a whirl first. One of the main things to get used to for me (so far) is the bare space where the can used to be...like someone else mentioned, it looks kind of naked when eyeing down the back of the bike...I'll look for a tip tomorrow to hopefully fill some of the void...we'll see....

My understanding of aftermarket stuff is around Remus - I think there's both a Y-piece which is more geared to the R1100R, and also a more cat-shaped backbox, which is more for the R1150R? The Y-piece apparently backfires more on the over-run, or so I've read...

After a Laser with cat, I installed a Remus (without baffle) with y-pipe.
During that install, I started the bike still with cat but already without can and thought "mhhh, yummy".
But at that time the bike was still under warranty, plus I had just spend a dollar or two for the (used) Remus, so I just had to use it. The Remus sounds very nice, but I'm glad I didn't buy it new.
When Wüdo came out with their underside can, I got curious again, and now after reading all eight pages of this excellent thread, I'm itching all over and will be digging up storage this weekend to see under which pile my cat is hidden. I just love the looks of the bare rear wheel, and I love the idea of full-sized bags.
Now–has anyone seen my cat and heatshield?

Can's off
After a week from taking my 2004 Roc home and reading this thread I just took off the can.
The whole process took about 5 minutes. Loosened the lower bolt at the cat joint, removed the upper bolt, and slipped off the pipe.
I rode about 5 miles. The first impression was to have lost a bit of torque at low RPMs. I also felt at time a bit of a response gap when opening up the throttle. The "voice" is most definitely different, even though is by no means too noisy. The new sound is more appropriate to a large engine as the roc's. After all, most of us bought this bike for its aggressive look and the new sound certainly improves the experience. The wheel is also absolutely beautiful without the fat pipe.
I am still unsure about the initial loss of torque. I will have to ride it more.
Sure thing is that I just pulled my first wheelie on this bike.
But I am aware I could have just been "inspired" by the better sound...
