Fuel Filter and 24K service

I just got my 24k service done at the dealer and the checklist they gave me said it included the fuel filter replacement. After they were done the Tech said I should have the filter replaced. When I asked why it was not done they said it was an add on item, not part of the 24K service. The service manager said it would be no problem since the fuel filter only really needed to be replaced at 24k it the bike sits for months at a time. Sounds like BS to me. What do you guys think?

They always have been required on ours at 24K. BMW has changed some of the intervals as in brake fluid replacement, but I don't know of any fuel filter interval changes. You should question the dealer a little more closely as to why no filter replacement.

Fuel filter replacement at 24k if i recall correctly in the RR service manual I got when bike was new. That was the interval, I asked about doing it at the 6k service and was told not necessary till 24 k

I think it is recommended at 24k. Maybe it was 30k. I had mine done, no noticeable difference.

Your dealer is giving you BS. I would look for another dealer if I were you.

Sounds like the service manager just pocketed themselves a couple hour labor time and I'd bet a $1 that you were still charged for it!!

Consumer beware, there are a lot of thieves out there, interestingly enough there are about the same amount of charlatans, so the question is where are those that know and can be trusted......they are a dying breed.

Get cozy with your lady and learn how to do basic maintenance.....you will be both happier and she will <the bike that is> appreciate the care.

Sounds like BS on your dealer's part. I got the same story from mine when they replaced my fuel tank at 10k miles - I told them to put a new filter on while they had everything apart. When I got the bike back, they said the filter doesn't need to be replaced until 24k, so they didn't do it. That wasn't the point though - my feeling was that a new filter (that I was paying for!) was cheap insurance and could have easily been done when everything was apart, rather than wait for the 24k mark and take everything apart again.
That was when I made my mind up to do as much of my own work as possible.

Flim Flam artists everywhere! The dealer wouldn't know what kind of gas you've been getting where ever you've been, and wouldn't know if your filter was dirty unless they took it out and tested it. Chances are your gas has been mostly clean unless you've been running down to Mexico regularly, but all it takes is one bad tankful. If you don't notice the bike not wanting to do high speeds, it's probably ok, but on the other hand, changing the fuel filter at the recommended interval is cheap insurance from having to replace a fuel pump that burned up due to lack of cooling from reduced fuel flow.
