bike concerns after shipment

I recently moved to Israel for work and shipped my r1150r with my household goods. It should arrive in port next week. In order to empty the fuel before shipment I basically ran it dry. The next morning, i noticed that a black plastic cap fell off on the right side of the engine (less than 2 inches in diameter). It doesn't appear to be vital and fit back on once the engine had cooled. When I unpack the bike, i plan on going over it thoroughly. Should I be concerned with anything in particular? it has been in a crate for about 2 months. :?:

The little rubber plug is the cover to the timing hole which is just below the TB. It is very cheap, it can fall off and sometimes when people remove it it falls inside the bellhousing (no problem). Not having it there is not a major problem, if you are going to replace it get one for a GS they are far more sturdy.

Regarding your bike after the trip.....there is nothing to worry about.....fill the tank with fuel, turn the key on/off several times to allow the fuel pump to prime and fill the lines, check all fluids, air your tires, check that bike over for shipment damage and enjoy........

Lost mine to the bellhousing learning to do my valve timing. That was probably 1000 miles ago and no issues what so ever. Used a piece of duct tape that is still there!!! Just found the replacement part and plan to do it this cold dark winter...
Life is too short to use cheap toilet paper :D

To add to Boxermania's comments about checking the bike over...........

If they are not a specialist bike mover, then try and be at the unpack site to see how the bike was strapped down. Check carefully for bent handle bars, damaged brake lines and throttle cables, cracked mounting points for the beak and other plastic bits, and pay particular attention to the seat.

Removalists have a habit of strapping bikes down over the seat, not a problem if 'appropriate' tension is used, but the big ratchet straps can buckle seat pans and compress the seat enough to bend frame rails.

Also look for 'rub' points where other stuff may have vibrated against the bike.

Karter,

Was your bike crated for shipment, or just left loose? Have you checked out the biosecurity controls in Isreal for importing used vehicles? You may find that an inspection is required and, if so, you should insist on being there.

Here in NZ, MAF (biosecurity) inspect every used vehicle for contamination. If a m/c is crated, then that crate is opened to enable inspection. Trust me, if appropriate tools are not available to lift the lid, then a fork hoist can be used!

If your bike wasn't crated, you may find that it was rested on it's side on a pallet to enable lifting with forkhoist. Look for evidence of this, i.e. scuffing on one side only.

If you can get to see how bike was handled/packed, take plenty of photos just in case you later discover something that was obviously caused by poor handling.

Hope it arrives safe and sound and ready to explore.

The bike itself was crated separately from my other household effects and the ratchet straps were placed over the seat and just behind the handlebars. The crate seemed sturdy enough and was especially for bikes as it had a track for the wheels to roll into. I'll let you know how it goes and send some photos from the Dead Sea when I get it running. I appreciate all of the input.

Your statement is not very clear. Since you quote my statement, are you refering to me, or Karter's original post.

The only black rubber plug on the R is the timing hole cover on the right side if the bellhousing....that I can recall.

Sure, but how about the only 2-inch diameter plastic cap on the right side of the bike... 8)

I think he's gotcha here Al. Sounds to me like the telelever pivot cover. Those things have a habit of falling off for no reason. A new o-ring may be in order.

I didn't even catch that. The part is a plastic cap and I believe has a twin cap on the left side of the bike (though I haven't seen my bike or any like it sonce I arrived 2 months ago). Is this part vital? It didn't seem to be damaged, just loose. :?:

That should be the least of his worries after moving over there.
A good armor shield around the bike would be a great farkle.
