I HEARD THAT..... I'M THINKING THE SAME--- LOVE THE R1200R BUT WHEN I SELL IT...........,, PROLLY BE THE LAST BMW I OWN...... PRICEIER THAN A HARLEY AND JUST AS PRONE TO BREAK,, MAYBE EVEN MORE SO... DONT GET ME WRONG BMW'S A CLASSY BIKE BUT THEY GOT A LONG WAYS TO GO IN TERMS OF FACTORY SUPPORT AN CUSTOMER RELATIONS. IN TERMS OF "FAIRNESS" IN PARTS PRICING-- WELL,, FOR ME I FIND BMW PARTS PRICES--- INSANELY EXPENSIVE.

Well I guess I'm firing on the OTHER one!

I stopped at a store very briefly on my way home from my 12 mile commute. After, when I then hit the starter, I got a very loud backfire and the engine wouldn't catch.

After about 4 attempts, it finally started, only to run very loud and very rough, with the smell of unburned fuel coming out the back. I limped about 2 more miles home.

I will call my local (San Francisco) BMW dealer tomorrow to see if they want to come get this sick puppy, or have me chance driving it in to their shop.

Whadda bummer, and it was running so beautifully after my 18K service. I'll keep ya posted.

Well this ONE turned out to be easy, but puzzling nonetheless.

The right throttle body had somehow worked its way out of its cinch clamp (where it meets the mount on the intake manifold) and was therefore spraying its fuel anywhere but into the cylinder.

The service manager had no explanation of why this happened or how to prevent a repeat. But he was SURE it wasn't covered under warranty! The clamp was in place but they replaced it anyway.

Oh well, at a $44 repair bill, it was just slightly more than the cab fare to go pick up the bike.

At least the tow was covered by the Roadside Assistance program. So far anyway.

Anybody else ever have their throttle body go AWOL? (I'm thinking of carrying a spare old-fashioned stainless steel screw-type hose clamp.)

Bill, very weird.

If it's like the R1150 mount - there is a groove in the throttle body that is supposed to lock it into the rubber mount.

If for some reason it does it again, I'd look at replacing PN6.. but I somehow imagine something happened to knock it out of place. Was the bike parked where someone might have bumped into it with a shopping cart or something?

Well it looks like the saga has come to an end - Ive had the bike back about 9 days now and so far it's fine - I hope it stays that way. BMW Corporate South Africa in the personage of one Mr.Rob Holder, National Sales Manager Motorcycles - South Africa have point blank refused to extend the warranty in any way and will not even add on the three months it was in their workshop but at the same time have agreed to bear the cost of the 1000 & 10000km service on the rebuilt motor. On the brighter side the dealership I purchased the bike from BMW Auto Umhlanga have taken it upon themselves to come to the party and the dealership as such will carry the extra three months for the period it was in their workshops given that BMW Corporate refuse to do so.

this is weird......everything should be covered under warranty for 3 years accept for the normal wear and tear (tires, brakes, etc....) It does not look like YOU have done anything personally to cause that problem......this sounds like a manufactuaring defect.....
I'd call BMW directly to find out if this should be covered....but on the other hand...it's probably easier to swallow $44 then talk to those guys.....

Congratulations, Phillo, on completing the long, bumpy, frustrating journey. Glad to hear your dealer did right by you. Finally!

Graf - My sentiments exactly. For $44, I avoided talking to a corporate bureaucrat. What a bargain!

Don - Can't think how anything could have bumped this area on my bike, since it's very protected by the valve-cover on the front, the throttle switch on the rear, and, on my bike, a highway peg clamped to a crash bar just below the area. And there was no sign of impact. I guess we'll just never know and, hopefully, never have another instance. As you said, weird.
