The charcoal cannister is not in the tank. It is the black cylinder above the bracket for the passenger footpeg. Some people have moved it under the tank, into the space where the ABS module sits.

I'd also considered a Techlusion or RhineWest (either or?), but if their job is to make things richer, that would be the opposite of what I want.

From all I've read about a techlusion, it is used to either richen or lean out the mixture, not just to richen it.
Most readers comment their bikes are normally somewhat lean, so the techlusion is normally used to richen
the mix just a bit. If you're smells rich, something's off. Like has been said, check the air filter for one.

And, yes, synth oil will help. As it doesn't thin out as much as dino oil when hot, you can use a somewhat lighter weight like 15W40 instead of 15W50 in the summer. And you can go a step lighter in colder weather with synth,
it'll start easier and warm up quicker, and the oil will get to circulating in the engine quicker, helping to prevent some of the wear which occurs at start-up.
