For years I had multiple motorcycles but finally cut back in 2007 to just one bike - less time wrenching and more time riding.

Some of the collections here could make a fella feel inadequate.

I guess people here don't subscribe to the less is more philosophy .

Just a bunch of old guys trying to spend everything they have before they die, or the goverment takes it away from them (I speak for myself naturally).

I used to say one could not have too many motorcycles, I have reconsitered that opinion. At one time I had 32 motorcycles, many British, German, and Japanese classic and vintage bikes, all restored to mint condition or found in very good shape, they have all been a great deal fun and pride to take them to the shows or race them in AHRMA vintage races. Along with ownership comes alot of work to keep them all running, licensed, insured, etc. Over the past 4 or 5 years I have pared it down to the 17 in a previous post. I like riding the old relics but one tires of the matainance, thats why the R12R more riding time, less matainance.

I look at the '67 MGB, the '74 CB750 and the '79 CBX and think: Wow these will all be pretty neat when they turn 50 and hopefully I'll be around to enjoy them. After they get to be a certain age, you sort of owe them a duty of care that includes cleaning, polishing and regular running. You're doing it for your children.

Lets say a good small engine that could allow hundreds of real cruising
for hours without breaking. Just like the one of the R1200R...

Even if never running over 35 mph

It could be a BMW engine with some small brake discs...

It seems to have a distinctly BMWish sidestand on it..

Good eye, Don! After breaking two cast aluminum bicycle sidestands, I visited my local motorcycle salvage yard and dug through a cardboard box full of sidestands until I found the likely candidate which, I believe is from a very old BMW. It weighs about as much as a racing bicycle!

Actually that stand has since been replaced by a nifty accessory from the Xtracycle people who supplied the rear cargo frame. It's a cro-mo steel center stand that works beautifully.

Not English. I built the bike up myself (English heritage and once owned a Austin-Healy!).

The frame is the Instigator by Surly in the US. But I know what you mean by arabesque engineering style: I once lusted after a Hetchins road bike frame with its trademark curly rear stays and beautifully filigreed lug work.

The front forks are downhill racing forks by White Industries, US. The cargo portion is by Xtracycle in US. The motor mount is fabricated by Cleverchimp.com in Portland, OR. The motor itself is, of course, from China. The rear hub is 14-gear Rohloff Speedhub, one of the pinnacles of Teutonic engineering from Germany.
