Re: Hannigan Fairing for R1200R

I'm betting it's a bolt-on for the sides of the fairing, a nacelle kind of thing. I will inquire...
Welcome to r1150r.net, your largest online source for all things R-R!
https://www.r1150r.org/board/

... sorry for the length, but for those who are interested, it's a good read.HI Peter,
I think you may have something there about the odd shape of the front of the R1200R's fuel tank. It is unusual when the forks turn inside the tank and fuel is carried slightly ahead of the forks. This very well may direct air to rider. Our fairings never allow air to hit this part of the tank so up drafts and turbulence are a thing of the past.
I have attached the Rider's Features Sheet below.
The people I have heard call our fairing ugly are those that have never ridden with one. One of our customers owns five bikes with our fairings and last year received his 1,000,000 million mile badge from BMW. He thinks they look pretty good. I just rode back from the west coast just a few hours ahead of last week's big snow front coming through Denver. The cross wind ahead of this front was 30 mph, gusting to 40. I rode 900 miles this day, from Chama, NM to Paris, AR. Even with a cross wind the fairing generates an envelop of calm air. The wind does blow the envelop down stream so sitting a little off to the down wind side rewards the rider with a calm and much more relaxing ride. I never wear earplugs and 90% of the time my face shield is open. The dominant sound on my R1200R with Hannigan Fairing is the front tire and a little tappet noise. I leave the earplugs for noisy motels. When riding into cities I don't want earplugs blocking the traffic sounds around me. I need this information to make better riding decisions. Hannigan Fairing quiet allows this.
If I were worried about what others thought about the looks of my ride I would drive a car and only travel by airline. The cool thing about riding is there is room for all kinds of looks and ideas. It is not a mini van kind of world, it's open to all. There are a riders that don't get fairings and there are riders that don't get BMWs. A BMW doesn't look much like a Harley. Then most Harley riders (not all) don't get riding five or six hours without stopping. Or for that matter riding down roads that turn to gravel. These are the roads I look for, as there is hardly any other traffic and the mountain views will not be found in next month's Rider Magazine. The R1200 is not a bad off pavement bike as long as you are not in a big hurry. Our Hannigan Fairings are tough enough to stand up to decades of this kind of riding. If you do decide to purchase a Hannigan Fairing for your R1200R you will be different and probably be the first on your block with one. When your riding buddies are grousing about the buffeting and wind noise after a long day in the saddle you will have a different experience and better fuel mileage.
Best regards and good riding to you,
Jerry Heil

Hannigan Fairing Rider Features for BMW R1200R:
The Hannigan Fairing for the BMW R1200R was specially designed for this motorcycle to be light and sleek, fitting the R1200R’s performance and handling, while still providing the durable aerodynamic weather protection Hannigan Fairings are known for.
Hannigan Tradition of Quality Aerodynamics:
Hannigan Fairing's 30+ year history of providing wind-tunnel-designed, custom built weather protection for riders is your assurance of a quality built, attractive and functional riding and traveling tool for your motorcycle. NRCC* wind tunnel development and research shows that the bike and rider cut more cleanly through the air with a Hannigan Fairing. Other fairings and windshields waist 10 to 18 engine horsepower just to push the bike down the highway when compared to a Hannigan Fairing. The efficient, low drag shape of a Hannigan Fairing increases fuel economy and reduces stress and wear on your engine. A Hannigan Fairing leaves more throttle response and horsepower available for passing and acceleration. Hannigan Fairings make improvements in the R1200R’s efficiency and performance while keeping you out of the bugs and wind blast.
Tailored Ride Qualities
The Hannigan Tour-Shield System provides a calm envelop of wind blast protection. When you order your fairing we provide you the technique for measuring your riding line of sight which takes into account your bike’s seat height, handlebar height plus your torso length and posture. We tailor windshield and spoiler to your measured line of sight giving you a fairing custom fit to you the best in riding comfort.
With your riding line of sight measurement we choose a windshield height that places the top edge of the windshield 2-3 inches below your line of sight. This places your Hannigan Slipper windshield spoiler just below your line of sight for a quiet and earplug-free ride. If you need more air for hot weather riding remove the Slipper in 60 seconds. The result is a fairing that fits the way you ride and the weather you ride through.
For more Sport oriented riders we also offer the Hannigan Sport-Shield. This is our lowest windshield giving your bike a long and stretched out look while placing your head and helmet in undisturbed air flow. Some riders prefer to take advantage of our windshield special which is a Sport-Shield for summer commuting and the tailored Hannigan Tour-Shield System taller windshield and spoiler for touring and cooler weather. Swapping windshields takes about six minutes.
Need more wind and bug protection? Choose the look-through Hannigan Original Spoiler. Removable look-through Hannigan Spoiler adds 6" to the windshield height and pushes air around your helmet and away from your face. Helmet noise is nearly eliminated. We position the Original Spoiler using your riding line of sight so you look through the lower half of the spoiler and if you sit up at attention you can just see over the top. The Hannigan Original Spoiler stores in the fairing’s center storage opening.
With the Hannigan Tour-Shield equipped with either Original or Slipper Hannigan Spoilers the dominant sound is from your front tire and engine which are no longer masked by wind noise. Most importantly you hear more of the traffic sounds around you so you make riding decisions based on more complete traffic information.
With your head out of the noise and buffeting what about the rest of you? Behind a Hannigan Fairing your hands are out of the direct wind blast with the stock handlebars or after market bar backs. Your legs are out of the wind starting from 5” below your knees and on up. This level of wind and weather protection reduces fatigue on long rides and on cool days allows cold weather gear and grip heaters to be more effective in keeping you comfortable. Three types of lowers options are available for even more cold and weather protection.
Three Lowers Options:
Hannigan Fairing two piece Mid-Lowers come down to the top of the cylinders leaving only the rider’s boots in the breeze. Stainless fasteners with locknuts hold the Mid-Lowers to your fairing.
Hannigan Classic-Full-Lowers offer the look of the classic BMW RS style in a modern design bringing good weather protection down to your boots for comfort in cool and rainy weather. Two piece design allows quick removal and installation as the seasons change. Stainless fasteners with locknuts hold the Full-Lowers to your fairing.
Full-Tour-Lowers bring weather protection below your boots for maximum rain and cold comfort. Lowers attach with stainless steel fasteners and locknuts for dependable weather protection and durable good looks. Remove or install in 9 minutes.
Hannigan Full-Lowers operate using the effects of Bernoulli's theorem which describes the low pressure generated behind your engine as air accelerates over the surface of the Lowers. This low pressure draws more air through your engine’s cooling fins so it runs at lower temperatures with Hannigan Fairing Full-Lowers in place. Not only is your engine not working as hard to push you and your bike through the air with a Hannigan Fairing, it also runs cooler with Hannigan Full-Lowers.
Hannigan Fairing Storage:
Store as much as 25 liters in the R1200R Hannigan Fairing (25 liters is a medium sized saddlebag) through snap down hard center cover. You always have a place for rain suites and cold weather gloves without strapping on a seat bag or saddlebags.
Hannigan Fairings provide you with space for mounting extra gauges, iPod, cell phone, radar detector, satellite radio and GPS on the fairing’s deck below the windshield without blocking the fairing’s storage compartment. The deck is nearly two square feet so it also makes a handy place to park gloves when stopping or coffee.
Sturdy Frame Mount Construction:
Hannigan Fairing Company’s frame-mount fairings apply no wind loads to the steering system of the motorcycle. This provides riders with solid and stable weather protection.
Hannigan Fairing Company welds its mounts from solid steel with no fracture prone tubing. Your Hannigan mount comes with all stainless fasteners and locknuts for durable good looks and trouble free riding. We powder coat and oven cure each mount for a tough, rust resistant finish.
The Hannigan Fairing wiring for the R1200R is a direct plug in with without splices or Scotch Locks for a quick, low fuss installation and lights that stay bright for decades of riding.
Hannigan Fairings and Handling:
Motorcycle handling, that good feeling you get when rolling your motorcycle through a corner accurately and with confidence. Hannigan Fairings contribute to good motorcycle handling in three important ways.
1.) Saddlebags and trunks carry weight behind the rear axle which un weights the front tire. As you accelerate around a corner the engine torque also tends to lift the front tire. Hannigan Fairings store weight between the axles of the bike and mainly weight the front tire keeping it planted on the pavement. Riding gear moved from the saddlebags or trunk to your Hannigan Fairing balances the load between the axles.
2.) Most windshields and fairings act as wings and tend to lift the front tire from the pavement. At freeway speeds this un-weighting can be as much as 13 lb. Wind tunnel testing of Hannigan Fairings at the NRCC* 3 meter tunnel show a Hannigan Fairing generates 9 pounds of down force on the front tire at 100 mph. This increases the traction the front tire has at speed making for a more connected and positive feel when rounding corners.
3.) Handlebar mounted windshield and fairings apply wind loads to the steering system of the motorcycle. This leads to an unsettled or busy feeling in the front of the motorcycle with each passing truck or gust of wind. Frame mounted Hannigan Fairings transmit no wind loads to the steering system of the motorcycle for a more stable and confident feel in the bike’s handling.
By keeping more traction and stability at the front tire Hannigan Fairings produce better feel, tire control and confidence in the handling of your motorcycle.
Construction & Finish:
Standard Finish:
The black on Hannigan Fairings is the gel coat which is a part of the fiberglass molding process. The gel coat is the first thing that goes in the mold and it protects the glass fibers and structural resins that make up your fairing. The gel coat protects the fairing from ultra violet light and direct impact once the fairing is on the bike. The gel coat is four times thicker than paint and is tough and durable. If you have seen fiberglass boats, the white part in the water is gel coat.
Because it is the very first step in the manufacturing process the gel coat is subject to all the subsequent processes. It, therefore, is not as glossy and perfect as a good paint job that is put on at the end of the manufacturing cycle. For many riders the tough gel coat finish fits their riding. Because the gel coat is not perfect we offer optional color match painting.
Color Matching Option:
Hannigan technicians can color match your fairing to your bike using DuPont or PPG two-stage urethane paints. We hand buff and polish each fairing for a tough, long lasting finish for your fairing investment. We also work with two custom paint houses for more exotic work such as flames, nose art or pin striping to set your fairing and bike apart from the crowd
As you are probably aware the paint on your bike has been changing subtly everyday due to sunlight and ozone exposure. In order for us to match your bike’s current tint and hue go to your local DuPont automotive paint store (auto parts store) with your bike on a sunny day. Ask to use their color chip catalog. Each color sample has a hole in the center so when placed on your tank the original paint shows through the sample making comparison easier. Choose the best match to your color while it is in the sun. Close the book and take a break then come back to check your selected color a second time. Send us the DuPont paint part number you select. We guarantee the fairing to be the DuPont paint part number you select. This practical method of color matching paint from a distance has given our customers good results.
To paint or ride with the standard gel coat depends on how you plan to ride and show your motorcycle. We will make your fairing with the finish that best meets your riding needs.
Tough Fiberglass:
Hannigan Fairing Technicians hand-laminate each fairing from quality resins and fiberglass making your fairing a light, tough and repairable riding and traveling tool. The monocot construction of Hannigan Fairings mean they are strong without the under lying heavy steel framework of most factory plastic fairings.
Lighting :
The R1200R headlight is one of the best OEM units we have found so we designed your Hannigan Fairing to accept your original equipment BMW headlight.
DOT approved turn signals built into each Hannigan Fairing, standard equipment.
Quality Extras:
30+ years of parts support for riders on the go with priority parts packing and overnight shipping available to most places.
Hannigan Fairings are known for their long term value. New model mounts and application advice available so when you buy a new bike you can move your Hannigan Fairing to it and keep on riding!
High quality mirrors in aerodynamic housings give a good view day and night.
Detailed installation instructions with lots of photos and drawings included for a fuss free installation.
Investment:
Our customers consider their Hannigan Fairing superior to BMW's RT fairing. Hannigan Fairings provide a quiet ride, equivalent aerodynamics and less weight. Plus Hannigan Fairings have a saddlebag's worth of storage in the fairing. If you compare prices we save you about $3,000.00 off the price of a BMW RT. This savings takes into account the BMW system saddlebags on both bikes. With that in mind, a Hannigan Fairing System for your R1200R is:

So sayeth Jerry... I'll make a point of asking if there is additional hand protection available...Behind a Hannigan Fairing your hands are out of the direct wind blast with the stock handlebars or after market bar backs.
