I had good luck with Continental Sport Attack and ME 880's are good. My pilot roads performed well but lasted poorly - maybe too soft of a compound.

Shinko Raven 9 are very good tires.
I've already used two sets.
Rear tires last no less than 6k miles.
I'm using now ME880 Metzeller, have 5k miles on them right now, they will last easy 3k more; so they'll end up lasting longer than the Shinko, but also they are much more expensive.
Me880s are also very good tires. If a difference exist with the Shinkos it is too small to tell.
Place to buy Motorcycle superstore, price wise, service wise.

No regarding Michellin Pilot Roads..., I've heard the do not last that much.
But be aware Pilot Road 2 are a different thing, they last a lot, I read.
I used to ride offroad with Michellins Desert, they lasted forever, if they can do it for off road I believe they are able to do it for street bikes too.
I personally will try them after I finish with the Me880s I'm currently using.
I'm satisfied with the ME880s, the thing is I want to find out and compare.

That color combo is my favorite but I got the same kind of deal on a '02 Ferro & Yellow. It was WAY overused with 5700 miles though! But when a deal comes you have to take it.

With regards to your choice of tires I would highly recommend the Michelin Pilot Road 2. Stay away from the Shinko as it will not make you happy.

I recommend Continental Conti Motion's. You can find them online right now at $99 for the rear, and $69 for the front. In the past I always used the Metzeler Z6's, but I was replacing tires so often, I decided to just try something cheaper, and the Conti Motion's have been great so far. I can lean over just as far, and just as confidently on them as I could on the Z6's, and I'm spending about half as much as I used to on tires. It's hard to beat paying only $168 for a SET of tires, when that is what I used to spend for just the rear.

By the way, that is a great looking bike. I've got a black '03 R1150R, and I wish it had the blacked out engine/transmission/final drive like your's.

Nice new ride, I ordered the same color new in 05. I could have got an 04 for the same $ w/ABS but thought long term repair issues and went with no ABS. I removed the muff can, with no ill effects to make way for full size RT hard bags and lowered my wife' s foot pegs, she got long legs. And the rear seat was so bad,that we went with a Rick Mayer leather saddle. As far as the front fender, it's a "beakster" so live with it. my next buy is a aero or para windscreen. Enjoy it, it's great off pavement as well.

RT bags will fit? I have a brand new set I was going to sell but if they fit............ Do I have to perform any mods? They're going to look pretty large back there!

The right side bag is the same as the RT. However, the exhaust can must either be lowered or removed for the left-hand RT bag to fit.

BTW, page62, that's a beautiful bike! Congratulations on a great find!

You will LOVE the PR2.

I too have the Pilot Road 2's on my bike. I have found them to be surprisingly durable, and unlike the Pilot's, they are also good in the wet. 6,000 miles on this set and they still are in fine shape, I would not be surprised to get another 3-4,000 miles before changing.
As for final drive failure, of all the BMW owners I have met and ridden with, I know of one human who had a problem. These things seem to have a mythic life on web forums, just like the problems I didn't experience, but was warned about with many other bikes I've owned. The gentleman I know who had the problem solved it by replacing the bearing in the rear, not the entire unit, although I'm sure that would work as well at a more dear price point.

And despite my whining and moaning I've still got my 1150R and it's NEVER let me down and I'm gradually warming to it.
I think I might just keep it.......
