I might be paranoid, but that does not mean the bastards are not out to get me. And if I had a bike that went from no appreciable oil usage to a full quart in 1000 miles, I would worry about it. On the other hand if the bike consistently used a quart every 1000 miles, I would accept it and not worry about it. It is the sudden change that causes my concern. And too hot weather is not it. I ride in too hot weather year round here in South Florida and my bike uses maybe one half quart between 6,000 mile oil changes.

Yeah Bill... thats why I was concerned. Maybe its nothing, but after finally not consuming any oil, then resuming the loss I can't figure it out. I haven't been able to ride this past week but I'll be out over the weekend covering some ground and I'll see if it continues.

I do have an appointment at the dealer next week just in case as I have a long trip to ME planned next month. Here's hoping it's nothing...

Long story short, I had this same thing happen on my then new K1100RS in 1995, right after the Level II service. It turned out to be the head gasket not sealing (which was not obvious) and after a lot of messing around (i.e. new short block, new heads-yes twice the head was changed, two complete tear downs) it turned out that the head bolts had stretched and were bottoming out before they could seal the gasket. Then the same thing happened to a friend of mine with his 2000 R-RS Oil head at a different dealer in a different region of the country. You are going to have to involve your dealer to get this resolved if it is something along these lines. How, you might ask, could the head bolts stretch? It was hypothesized that it was caused by a faulty (or damaged) torque wrench used during the service.

One last thing, this problem should not prevent your upcoming trip to Maine. My wife and I went from our home outside Boston to the MOA National in Durango that year with the problem unresolved. I just took it easy and kept adding oil. To that extent I agree with the "don't worry, be happy" contingent. Your bike will not let you down.
