Re: Best tires

Post by milehighboater »

Its beginning to look like I'm going to have to replace my front tire. Right now I'm running Metzeler Roadtec z6s that came on the bike and I have put about 5k miles on them. Is there a tire that will give me a bit more mileage? I ride year round on the highway through some rain and snow, The metzelers have done great but I need a tire that will last longer than a year (~12k miles). Any suggestions?

I am running a Metzler 880 on the front with about 2k on it just replaced rear 880 with only 5k the cords were showing. I installed a pr3 about 500 miles ago. CyleRob tried to tell me to put pr2 or pr3's on when I changed the front, should have taken his advice as well as several other people on this forum. Even only having the pr3 on the rear the bike handles much better than b-4 can't speak about mileage but if the pr3 gives a least as much wear as the 880 did I will be using them again.

Btw I can,t feel anything unsafe or unstable in any way. braking, cornering or high speeds by running two diff. brand tires of course I don't ride very fast, too many critters and too many nice views to be seen.

The PR3s gave me the most mileage, and PR2s second most 14 vs 11
Actually the 880s lasted about the same distance as the PR3s for me. The PR3s gripped better.
I am running Pirelli Scorpion Trails now and they stick best of all, but their mileage will not be that great, I am thinking about 8+k miles from them.

My feeling is if you can get a great deal on the PR2s to compensate for the 3k miles difference between them and the PR3s, get the 2s. Otherwise get the PR3s

Hi Jeff,
Just thought you'd like to know that I had a bike ride to Newark yesterday.
That's Newark, Nottinghamshire where our unlamented King John died.
From memory the Metzelers were around 30% cheaper here.

Just a footnote: We put a set of the PR3's on our 2006 Wee Strom, it has made a drastic improvement in handling and ride. They are a tremendous confidence builder.

Metzeler Z-8's.
8 to 10K on rear. 10 to 12K front on my 04.
Mostly riding quickly on rough asphalt canyon roads in Southern California.
grippy, smooth riding, and won't break away on a hard turn.
Looking at a replacement. Maybe a newer Michelin?

Love the Pilot Road 3's. Got over 11,000 miles on the PR2's before them and could have gone at least another 1,000 miles.

The bike had Metzler's (Z6 I think) on it when I bought it. They didn't seem to have nearly as much grip as the PR3's.

I'd be delighted to get 5000 miles from tyres and not 5000 kilometres which is roughly what I achieve from any brand. Bought Metzeler Z6 as they are the cheapest (and cheapest available) I'd trust.

We are trying a set of Pirelli Angel GT's on the 2002 1150R. I rode it about 300 miles last weekend and they make the bike handle really nice, I like them a lot maybe better than the Avon Storm 2's that are on my 2004.
