It goes over the ankle and it may not be as thick as boots designed for riding but with the velcro closures and level of comfort I'm ok with the choice. I can wear these all day without having to lug around an extra pair of shoes and they're easy on easy off and provide some level of protection over below ankle shoes

love my combat touring boots. they do have laces inside that cinch up the legging tight (no tying tho)
they are about thirteen years old, very water proof, good crash protection. recently resoled.
as long as you don't have to walk around or stand too much, they aren't for hiking.

The Apex boots I got about a month ago have been very comfortable.
The only downside, as I discovered en route to the office today, is not being waterproof. For light rains it's fine but when the rain gets heavier, my feet get wet.
