I don't have any warranty left so it's gone! I'd be re-fitting it for the MOT anyway so it could go back on before service etc. I'm going to take it for a ride around tomorrow without the can just to test it. :)

Hey Phil,

I had the can off the bike, so I thought I'd try something different:

Don't think I'll keep it this way, but will try it for while. I've been looking for a "slip on" muffler from a cruiser but I'm having trouble finding one with the 1 3/4" inlet.

Pretty soon I'll have a BMW "rat bike".

JB,
JC Whitney has a short slip on muffler that might be what your looking for. At least it is the right size.

Hi Don,

Thanks for the suggestion.

This may seem strange, but I already have one of those shorty 12" mufflers left over from a project on a different bike.

Even though it says it fits 1 3/4", the one I have needs a reducer to fit...I tried. IMO, it still doesn't look right. I need one that's 16" to 18"... maybe a megaphone syle... :)

Edit... I followed your link and found some other options to try.

My can is gone now! Fitted a short piece of chrome steel (from a vacuum cleaner....) and used the existing cover upside down like Taosports did to blend the cat and pipe junction. My missus thinks it's sad...BUT IT LIKE IT!

Haha I just read this thread this morning and on a impulse, I went down to my garage and took off my muffler. It sounds great! :D
I have had my 2002 since new in October 2001, have been a member on Doug's site since around that time and have seen posts on this mufflerectomy many times but never had the urge to do it until now...

It ran poorly when I initially started it. I shut it off, restarted it and it ran beautifully. Thank god for the closed loop ECM huh?

Thanks guys! Now I'm off to the local auto parts store for the chrome tip.

I took my muffler off and took a ride. The bike vibrates more which I didn't like so I'm going to put my can back on or I might order a Y pipe and Neptune muffler. One good thing is that it fires up instantly.

Well the bike seemed to have picked up a few extra ooomph without the muffler. The sound is a very pleasant deep throaty sound. Not loud at all. The front end does leave the pavement much easier than before. The surging decreased a little. Does not ping even with 89 octane. I love the full view of the rear wheel. Overall I am very satisfied with the result. The funny thing is, the idle went down a little bit. I wonder why....?
