In the meantime, I'm going to be thinking about the KR or RS or RST myself and decide, or something entirely different.
GypsyRR,

If this guy's serious and he's got real cash, then send him my way. I'm in SW Florida so it's on his way to Key West. I like my R but I'm willing to part with it on a solid deal (wife has some medical issues and we can use the cash). Call him and tell him you have a seller with a 2004 R1150R Series 80 (80th Anniversary Edition) in Alpine White with black trim. It's got 31,000 on the odometer and is in excellent condition with all of the touring amenities (bags, luggage rack, backrest, fog lamps) and gleaming chrome wheels (yes, chrome).

If you get a hold of him, let me know here on the board and I'll give you a way to reach me so I can contact him directly or vice versa.

Obviously, my spidey sense in not tingling - but I will have my police office friend there for the transaction if he says yes (just in case....)

EDIT:
Here are a couple of links to some pics of the bike:

Rich,

I will send another email to him and I will PM you his information (name, business, phone numbers etc.) so you can contact him as well. Maybe it will work out for you.

One way to secure your phone number and address. Would you have given them if he asked?

too good to be true is just that.

Understood, although the only info he would get is a work cell number (belongs to my employer) and a public meeting place (parking lot of a busy local grocery store) to make the transaction.

Yes, there are identity thieves and crooks everywhere. And I agree, the less personal information you give out, the better.... 8)

I didn't give out any of my phone numbers or address and the email address I used to email him the link to other bikes is my junk email address under a fake name.

I know is sounds like that from the little bit I wrote, but the guy asked again today if I would consider selling because he had just gone across town to a car/bike dealership and looked at a Green Rockster there and didn't like it. And I also happen to know a doctor down in the Keys who knows this guy as well and if I decide to sell, I'll call him and make sure he is not a scammer.

This is not the first time strangers have offered to buy this bike - and pay a good price for it. It happened last month too when I had it at the dealership getting Z6's put on it.

In the meantime, an appointment I had for tomorrow got cancelled and so that frees me up to go test ride a KR and an RS. The last time I was in, they told me they would let me take the demo KR out for a couple of hours. Hopefully it is not being loaned out when I call them tomorrow. Maybe I'll finally put this question of whether or not I would prefer a KR over an RR to rest.

AND, I'm usually a pretty good judge of character, i.e. I chose to hang out at this forum rather than any of the other BMW forums.

A little late perhaps, but I've never even been to New York and my "spidey sense" is tingling a bit out here on the left coast. But I sure don't think you're anyone's fool Gypsy, and if you're inclined to part with your "R" then he's certainly offered a good price!

And I recently gave serious thought to a K1200R as well, but while they're an awesome ride from what I understand they shred rear tires in fairly short order, something to think about... I wound up with an R1200ST (yes, the one with the funny headlights, but man do they work!) and absolutely love it. I had demo'd one a while back, and when I got back on my "R" it felt tall, heavy, and slow. I put 64k on that bike in 5 years and loved it, but the ST is mo' betta in so many ways. If you're "inseam challenged" like I am, it's a lot easier to reach the ground than the "R" ever was, even with a custom seat. And a genuine 200+ mile range! Of course, the R1200S ain't eggzackly chopped liver, either...

Seriously

Post by GypsyRR »

Seriously - this guy is now offering more cash for my bike and is willing to meet me at the BMW dealership to work the deal. I told him I would not part with my bike regardless of the fair market value unless he gave me enough cash to buy a KR or RS outright and he said, "certainly, I understand." So -....

Wow! If he's that eager, then go for it. And how convenient is that.... right at the BMW dealership! Seems he's really sold on your bike, I suppose. Hope it all works out alright. Let us know what happens.

Also, thanks for all the leg-work in my behalf. 8)

I KNEW it was not a scam. You guys just don't have a woman's intuition, do you?

BUT...........

I turned down the offer....... again. Maybe I'm a fool - but then again, maybe not.

It was a very interesting time and if I ever want to sell my bike this guy wants to buy it - not matter when.

I chose NOT to test drive the KR or the R1200S or the R1200R when I got to the store until Dan had confirmed exactly how much cash he would give me. So I showed him all three bikes and told him why I liked each one and what they offered. Still - he wanted my bike and not those and even offered to go to the bank and have them check the cash if I was worried about it. So I told him to look at the prices - that is how much I would need. So he started trying to get the price down on the K1200R which was the cheapest at $12,995. But BMW would not budge on the price. So although his offer was more than the original offer, it was still short of $12,995 plus TT&L.

So then he test drove a 03 KRS and really loved it. It was $10,500 and very clean. Again, he wanted me to take the KRS and he would buy my bike. Nope - I like the look of the naked bikes. He may go back and buy that after he looks at a V-Rod.

AND, then one of the employees at the store told me a secret about something coming up in the next couple of months that made me even more certain that I was not ready to sell my bike at this time.

I don't need to sell my bike. It's paid for. It's plenty of bike for me. It gets comments a lot and occasionally offers like this guy's. So I had no intention of going into debt for something I didn't intend to buy.

So basically, I did not test drive because I didn't need the temptation and I turned down the offer because it was not enough to put me on another bike without me going in debt.......

Instead I bought 4 qts of oil and an oil filter so I can change the oil on my perfect bike this week and left without regret and without debt. (but I did see this fine looking Corvette for sale on the way home.)

Nope. It is not a secret pertaining to BMW in general. But, you DJ, especially would love this secret and would have done the same thing I did if you had been in my shoes.

No, my momma couldn't tell me that, because I GOT the free lunch at school.

I know you may not be interested in how this strange story finally ended , but it still amazes me how this all happened, so I thought I would write the conclusion. At least, I THINK it is the conclusion. Just when I thought I had convincingly closed the doors and this guy (Dan) had realized I was NOT going to sell my bike........... it takes an odd turn.............

The short version:

I ended up selling him my Yamaha FZ1 instead. Money is in the bank and he is on the road back to Florida........... I hope (fingers crossed).

It is odd to me that he was so intent on having one of MY bikes even though he looked at a dozen while in the area - and none of them had been in the same category as the FZ1. I didn't tell him about the FZ until this a.m. because I figured it was only BMW's or V-rods he was interested in. The FZ1 was a fast, cool bike - BUT, it's no BMW.

So to be extra safe, because he is a complete stranger to me and everything seemed odd, and you guys seemed to think I should beware, I made the deal at my sister's house today with my brother-in-law there. I bought the FZ back in November for a price well below blue book, and I planned on selling it this Spring to make some cash on it. I did - and the cash is in the bank!!! And hopefully, I won't hear from this guy again!
