And I'm the one who always grumbles at Sparky for using the wrong tool for the job. Now that's Karma.
Since I have to wait on the dealer to order me another bolt, I went ahead and ordered those Omega QD's online. With my luck, those old stock QDs are subject to break at any time.
Yesterday afternoon I delivered my starter to Sleepy Hollow Rebuilders for rebuilding. They are good ole boys up in Cumming and rebuild starters and alternators for lots of folks around here. Two of my riding pals here in the GA club had their Bosch starters rebuilt there. I asked him if it matters that its French (Valeo). He said no.

Boy, around you become "old news" fast. I had to go to the 2nd page to myself.

The bike repairs saga continues. This morning I got the frame torqued down and some waiting pieces placed back together...throttle bodies, snorkel, air box cover and filter, headers bolted down to cat converter.

I only had one little brain fart while doing those things this morning. As I was torqueing that right rear frame bolt, I also had to tighten the two footrest plate bolts at the bottom. Smarty me just assumed the two bottom bolts were also to be 42nm and went to torque that baby down. It went...SLIP..and then just rotated. It would not tighten! YIKES! Even a moron knows what that means! I looked it up.. and it was only 21nm!!


I pulled the bolt and cleaned off that nasty aluminum in two threads, then put it back in. It tightened to about 6nm and will hold temporarily with the blue loctite I coated it with, until I can get back to it with the helicoil treatment...or something equally appropriate. Any suggestions are welcome.

On the stripped threads, that's another torque wrench victim. That's why after almost 50 years of wrenching, I almost never use them. Use them only for cylinderheads, rear wheel lugs and large threads like tensioners and TeleLever bolts . Everything else, I know what tight is by the strength of materials and the thread pitch/size/length. They never come loose and I never strip threads.

Your #1 repair choice should a Time-Sert Check out their FAQ page for a lot of info. I've used them in my NJ shop for years. It's professional looking and they allow full load after the repair. In Aluminum, the Time-Sert repaired thread, because of the larger diameter and steel threads, is actually stronger. Because an 8mm x 1.25 thread kit costs about $100, you'll want a Metric shop to do the repair. Plan "B" is use a longer bolt with a nut on the other side (there's room).

Got my new Omega metal quick disconnects today! Very nice.
They also sent me a free pack of Omega playing cards with pictures of all the parts they sell.


Now as soon as I can get these babies installed, I'll be able to move the Dominatrix back to the garage for cleaning, etc.
Then I can come inside and play a game of cards on the table where the bike now rests.

I have a really cheap solution for repairing your stripped threads. I can have Ron ship me by UPS the Time-Sert thread repair kit (8mm x 1.25) from my shop in NJ and I'll do the job myself. Just cover the insert used and UPS shipping costs for the small box and it's done.

OK, I'm watching "Bones" on Fox 5 TV and about 8:30pm they interrupt the show with an extreme weather warning. When I see that it's West of Marietta, GA and the predicted cone shaped path covers the town of Woodstock, I get on the phone to Boxer. I was gonna call him anyway.

When Jenny answers, I say Hi and ask her "Is your TV on? You've got a tornado coming your way!!" Then I talked (shortly) with Phil about installing the Time-Sert and when will the bike run before he needed to hang up to secure his garbage cans outside. That was a quick call.

The storm surge seem to dissipate as it moved northeast. By the time I got the trash cans secured outside and came in to check the weather on TV, there was only one station showing the pattern and displaying the tornado warning until 8:45. We had some of Jenny's kids over with several grandchildren entertaining us and they hung around for a while to see if we all needed to hunker down with the bike in the basement area and farting room. It all passed thankfully and we managed to get another couple of inches of much needed rain out of it.

I have to go out this morning to get some zip ties for securing the lines on the frame of the bike and then replace the tank.
I got the new Omega QDs installed yesterday and hooked up the battery, adjusted the clock and had to squeeze the little spade connectors tighter on the horn connection before it would work. Everything looks good, and I should be able to fire it up this afternoon after I get it back in the garage.
I'm looking forward to observing Rob put that Time-Sert in for me when the time comes.

Edited: After posting the above I looked outside and its snowing this morning. Tornadoes last night. Snow this morning.

I will trade you snow accumulations. What do you think? I almost rode down to Holt BMW today for their Open House, but I got stuck shoveling the driveway again.

We got something between 12-14" of snow in the last 24 hours. Lightning with snow is really bright.

Jeff, you have been pounded by snow? Yea, I FEEL FOR YA! Phil, looking really good! I wish Rob lived close to me also so I could be graced by his presence. REALLY!

Phil, are you sitting on the bike to watch tv?

No. When we sit on the couch and the seat is off the bike, we can see the TV through the "dip" in the bike frame just over the airbox/fuse box section. We have to put our heads together real close to avoid chopping off the corners of the image, but that's okay if its a snuggling partner anyway.

The bike is back in the garage today. I just went and got some gas in a can to put in the tank for a test start-up. She started okay, but is smoking like hell from around where the headers go into the exhaust port. I have an exhaust leak and I THOUGHT I had torqued those nuts down good. As soon as it cools down again, I'll go tighten them some more.

Does anyone have a suggestion how to seal those connections? It looks like my bike is smoking two cigarettes at once.

Phil, every time you use the word "torque", I cringe and the phrase "tighten them some more" also makes me sweat.

I feel your pain Carlos. I get the same feeling, but I just can't put the wrench down.

The smoking I see I believe is mostly the oil and "Liquid Wrench" stuff I sprayed all over that connection trying to loosen it up when I took it off. Tomorrow after work I will take off on a little ride and get it good and hot for an oil change out, then I should see if it still leaks after all that stuff is burned off.
