The Legend of Hungry Mother By According to Legend - from VirginiaOutdoors.com

Legend has it that when the Native Americans destroyed several settlements on the New River south of what is now Hungry Mother State Park, a young mother by the name of Molly Marley and her small child were among the survivors taken to the raiders' base. They eventually escaped, wandering through the wilderness barely surviving by eating berries. Molly finally collapsed, and her child wandered down a creek until she came across help. The only words the child could utter were "Hungry Mother." The search party arrived at the foot of the mountain where Molly collapsed to find the child's mother dead.

Today that mountain is Molly's Knob (3,270 feet), and the stream is Hungry Mother Creek. John D. and Mildred Lincoln donated 1,881 acres to the state for the establishment of a state park in Smyth County on Hungry Mother Creek in 1933. Later that year the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began construction of Hungry Mother and five other state parks. Roads, trails, picnic areas, cabins, a restaurant, bathhouse, dam and sanitation system were all built by the 600 CCC men at the park between 1933 and 1941. On June 13, 1936, the six-park Virginia State Park System was officially dedicated with public opening ceremonies at Hungry Mother State Park in Smyth County. More than 5,000 turned out to see the park as Governor George Peery and State Park Director Robert Burson officiated.

The Story of Hungry Mother cont.

Years later a group of motorcyclists from Virginia rode rat bikes and dirt bikes to Molly's Knob to avenge the death of Molly Marley. They didn't find any indians but decided to rent the entire loop "C" and get drunk. This was the beginning of the traditional Hungry Mother "ride for Molly".

Hmm . . . first time I heard the 'modern' version of avenging Molly.

In keeping with that legend, perhaps I should ride the DR and plan on drinking more than my usual 1 or 2.

The Story of Hungry Mother cont.

...and after a while the HM rangers and park employees began calling them "Molly's Knobs".

This is all well documented information.

Can someone bring some Flogging Molly music?!

And more than 2 beers makes me sleepy or way too entertaining! And also means way too many trips out of the tent during the night!

Info for attendees:
Saturday, August 20th is another "Back of the Dragon" Day. So, there will be plenty of southbound bikes on 16 in the morning and northbound in the afternoon. For any undecideds, do not let this deter you. We will probably be gone before and get back after the crowds. Plus, motorcycles are cool.

Some locals are trying to promote two wheeled tourism in the area. I like the idea, the name, not so much.
A little more Info here:
http://backofthedragon.com/?page_id=186

I attended the Tazewell side BOTD Day on June 4. There were Truimph demo rides as well as a fair percentage of interesting bikes mixed in with the chrome.

The squids sleep in. We can do 16 if we want without much traffic if we get an early start. :)

Did y'all know?...

In 1965, after graduating from Alvin High School, one of Major League Baseball's Hall of Famer pitchers, Nolan Ryan, signed a professional baseball contract with the New York Mets, and was assigned to a minor league team in the Appalachian League called the Marion Mets (1965–1976) in Marion, Virginia. Three years later he was pitching in the major leagues, debuting with the Mets in 1968.

Also, the recipe for Mountain Dew originated in Marion, VA with the Tip bottling company under the direction of Bill Jones. The original Tip building still stands on N. Main street. Jones' partner who started Tip, had to go off into the army and left his Jones in charge of Tip. He got the recipe for 7-Up and used it to develop Mountain Dew. It was sold to Pepsi later and the Dew stocks went up from there.

They were so good because they were hungry mothers!

Cool stuff, Phil. I had heard about Mountain Dew but did not know the other.

Also, Vann I didn't mean to kill your Flogging "Molly" reference. And iwoabeakster, HM is close enough to WV that the Young Dubliners won't be a problem.

Looks like my plans will be changing a tad. I'm not liking the idea of staying somewhere other than the campground - time to ride to motel and time to ride back. I'll most likely commit sacrilege and haul my bike down in my truck and then just sleep in the truck. Don't have a tent any longer (and don't want one). I kinda' have the necessity for 12 volt power anyways. See you all there. I'll also be able to haul pizza or wood which may be a plus.
