Has the CeeBaileys sport shield been around long enough for anyone on the forum to try one? At $119 it seems like a heck of a deal.

The screen you show looks impressive! But it is mounted on a 2010 or earlier model R1200R. Not sure if this would make a difference but there are quite a few changes on 2011 models, though screen blade(not bracket)fitting holes are the same.

daveyator wrote:Its still a work in progress but Joe is relentlessly trying to get the best all around shield possible. He is down to dealing with slight (although not terrible) upper helmet buffeting and trying to limit the wind from below. He thinks that open area around the forward tank area creates acute wind from below. The shield pictured actually has more space above the headlight (appeared to be about an inch) than you might at first glance think is ok but it seems that the air flowing through there actually counteracts somewhat the air trying to flow up from that forward tank area. He is also fiddling the the middle width of the shield. You may also notice there isn't the rake that some of us might be hoping for but this shield doesn't seem to need it. Remember he does his testing with an open face helmet so he should be getting a first hand sample of wind off of the windshield.
Thanks for the pics of the preliminary windscreen.

Wish that AeroFlow would step into the fray. I emailed them about a year ago, inquiring about creating a shield for the R12R. No response.

Well its on a 2007 R1200R....My Bike lol! You may have missed the first part of this thread. It is being designed for all R1200Rs. Yes there are a lot of differences between 2010 and 2011 but basic shape, size, etc are close enough . CB has ordered 50 2011 and on brackets so they can sell the whole set up to folks with the newer bikes. I sound like a spokesperson but I'm not. I just appreciate the time and effort this company is putting in on behalf of out bikes and if this shield is up to snuff I hope they sell a lot of them. At the very least this will be a shield thats a heck of a lot better and WAY cheaper than what BMW will sell you. Thats the idea behind the CB sport shield.

Since Joe has been riding the R1200R quite a bit - bet it's just a matter of time before he owns one.. He can join the Test-Ride Victims Club..

:)

While the bracket mounting is different on '11 and newer models - the basic mount appears to be the same angle as the older bracket and the holes are located in the same place. The only significant difference I could see was the instrument cluster on the '11 model is mounted closer to the rider - so clearance there isn't as big an issue. From looking at the photo of the beta shield - it appears CB/Joe provided for the older instrument cluster with a belly in the bottom of the shield.

FWIW - I mounted the new bracket on a friend's '11 R12R - in my garage right next to mine, so it was easy to compare. He's now running my small summer CB shield on his - waiting for the new one from CB to be available for ordering. Then I'll get to try the new one too.. :)

I keep asking him if there's anything he doesn't like about it and he keeps avoiding a direct answer!

I'll definitely be buying this new screen and selling my current one (screen, rack, block ... the whole package). There's too much helmet turbulence at 70mph with the current setup.

Maybe we need a group buy for the new screens and a group buy/sell for the current setup for those that want to go that way. :D

Well the new shield looks a little different from the older version but I still see that flare at the top. Since CeeBaileys does a lot of aircraft windscreen work I am sure they have a good reason but with our lower speeds (compared to an aircraft - most of the time  ) I wonder if it might not push the air up enough. I remember that back in the 80s we cut off the flare on the factory windscreen used on the R100RS and it got rid of the annoying buffeting - you just got hit in the upper chest with clean air. And the R100RS was supposedly tested in a wind tunnel - I believe, that was a long time ago. I like the raising of the lower edge of the screen to allow some air in. I think it helps reduce backpressure and was achieved on the R1150GS by using a "Tobinator" (kind of like a refined Don C/Ferguson block) that Wunderlich bought and then produced for the R1200GS too. It helped raise the screen for increased air flow and increased the rake.

I would like the end results of using a AeroFlow screen but they are so functional as to be butt ugly and pretty pricey. I can see how this could get real involved. Joe is trying to do something effective and keep it attractive, that has been one of his goals the entire time. A good looking screen that works reasonably well for probably somewhere around $200 to $250 (my guess based upon current pricing) is a pretty good deal in my world.

I have got so many windscreens in storage... Anyone wanna buy a R1150R touring screen setup, R1150GSA Adventure, R1200GSA, F650GS Dakar...? Just kidding... Man I just want that screen that works.

Don't jump so quick, objectuser! This is a screen in development, and I sincerely hope that it turns out very well, but we've got to wait and see. Daveyator will let us know when the time comes.

My screen works, perfectly, as is. I ride open-faced, and I can whistle a tune and could probably smoke a cigar at 100 mph in virtually dead silence. If this new screen works as well as mine I will be surprised, but I will also be very happy if it does, and will promote it as a simpler and more elegant solution than my extensive fiddling. I'm already convinced of CeeBailey's product quality, and Joe is to be commended for working so hard to get it right, but it is still too early to know the result. When he finally releases it Dave and I will probably do a dual ride to compare his screen and mine, and we'll let you know how it all comes out.

xprof,

Where does the top edge of the screen come in relationship to your head right now?

I got similar results with my R1200GSA with the Tobinator and a very oversized CeeBailey screen that ended much closer to my head than I think Joe will do it. I learned to close my face shield after 3 bees on 2 tours ended up sitting inside my helmet looking me in the eye. But for the bugs it was such a pleasure to be able to leave the shield open.

I have seen pictures of the Don C block mounted screen and it doesn't look as clean as I am trying to make it, it's just a personal thing. I was about to make my own version of a riser block so that the front edge did not stick out beyond the headlight and pick up the often mentioned glare and also for the looks. I think that the Roadster is such a nice looking bike that I will work hard to keep it looking nice until I give in out of frustration or practicality.

I am back to hoping that this screen works right out of the box but am not dillusional. If Joe gets it close I'll take it from there. Also, from what has been so often repeated, what works for one may not work for another. But to have a good starting point, much better than the one we had, would be greatly appreciated.

Chumley: Right on! You have tumbled to the fact that distance from top edge is critical. The top edge of my screen sits about 12" in front of my upper lip; leaning forward takes it to 10" and leaning back to 14", and it is good through that range. Joe at CeeBailey's said that most people wouldn't tolerate having the screen that close and would return the screen, and for that reason the new CeeBailey won't be raked as much as I want it raked. But I figure, as you do, that it will just be a starting point and that I will shim it out a bit to achieve what I personally want. I'm thinking 1/2" to 3/4" will be enough, and that can be done by just cutting appropriate lengths of stainless or aluminum tubing to put around the screws beneath the "hook", a cheap and easy solution.

BTW: Joe has a funny (to me) way of mounting the bike: he lies almost horizontally as he swings his leg over, whereas I step over with my body near vertical. His way brings his face into contact with the shield; mine does not. Mebbe that's the difference...

I just received an e-mail from Joe. As has been posted this thing is giving him fits. He said that he just cut several new designs (7 ?!?) but I don't know what that really means as far as variation from what we have seen.

Joe did clear up my misconception that there is a lot of flare at the top, he says that there is really no flare.

He alludes to this really being very difficult to work out. I wonder how many attempts it usually takes before good enough wins the battle. I wonder if he is figuring out how much some of us care and is going the extra mile for a customer base he is actually getting to know vs some faceless customer. As a businessman I have to look at the time that is being invested and the return on that investment. They will have to sell a lot of windscreens to make this back, I doubt Joe is just written off as overhead, he must be charging his time to this project. I don't know much about how his business operates but I suspect that this doesn't/can't happen often.

I am back to thanking Joe for his sticktoitadness and to Dave. Without Dave letting Joe keep his bike for a freaking month this would have ended a long time ago and either they would not have released this update or it might be less than optimal.

Thanks Joe, thanks Dave. :smt038

Note to everybody: Joe at CeeBailey's has just let me know that he has made what he thinks is a real breakthrough, that he's got a couple pre-production models out beta-testing, and that the new tall screen should be available very, very soon. Good news for all of us!

Awesome. Looking forward to it.

If anyone is interested in the current Cee Bailey's, along with the required mount and Don C's block, feel free to PM me. I'll be moving to the new solution when it's available.
