For what it's worth...GPS & radar detectors need 12 volts to power up but the cigarette plug-in has a regulated voltage control in line to knock down the surge voltage at engine start up. The voltage out of the "plug in " is 5 volts...hard wirinig the device direct to the battery or a 12vots source is asking for trouble...that is doing away with the plug-in that goes into the auto cigarette lighter socket. If I'm wrong please correct me... I just don't want anybody looking at smoke or a damaged device
