.....The Harley Davidson Experience continues as I took my '06 Road Glide (FLTRI) in for the 5K service. I phoned the HD dealership for a service appointment and got one just three days off. Went in at 8am, got written up, told them I would be "waiting" for the bike and wandered off to look at new Harley's, then walked to a nearby restaurant for a meal.
At 11am my cell phone rings and HD dealership informs me my RG is done---come get it. The 5K maintenance bill was $220---about what I paid for BMW service, but more than I paid for a 8K service on my GL1800. (I find the Gold Wing scheduled maintenance to be less expensive)
That was Wednesday. On Saturday, I look underneath the motor, in the oil filter area and I see..........OIL. "W.T.F." Drops of OIL. Oil dripping from MY Harley. (Gasp!)
It seems that unlike most BMW motorcycle motors since 1984, which had vertically mounted spin-on oil filters, Harley Davidson positions the oil filter horizontal----perhaps to show off chrome oil filters---I use a black filter! So when the HD technican removes the filter, trapped oil spills onto the front motor mount and adjoining area and I guess nobody bothers to clean up afterward.
After all, the new Twin Cam 88 doesn't leak oil, UNLESS the technician doing an oil/filter change is careless.
Now, a few issues with most HD motorcycles: Accessories are very e$pen$ive and somewhat complex to install. Passenger backrest for example....backrest cost about $160, but does not include the PAD for the passenger. Another $90-100 for that item with the HD logo. WAIT, we're not done....you must purchase a "docking kit" in order to mount the passenger backrest and which docking kit? I was asked:will you be installing a rear rack, too which requires a different D.K., or just the passenger back rest? How about locks for the docking kit. (Yes folks----some cretins steal Harley Davidson accessories simply by unlatching the item----as most of these accessories ARE REMOVABLE.) I've talked with HD owners who had e$pen$ive seats (one phillips bolt), driver or passenger backrests (unlatches), saddle bags (unsnaps) stolen!
I do miss the BMW way of adding accessories and power outlets as I'm attempting to install a BMW type power outlet onto the FLTRI. (Adding a BMW outlet on the Gold Wing was much easier) Most of the long distance HD riders I meet use the top of the line Ultra Classic, which comes with useful accessories and power outlets. Of course I would have to shell out another $6,000 to move up to a 2007 Ultra.......I already checked it out.
But for now I'm content with the FLTRI, soon to be having satellite radio and an 4.5 gallon auxillary fuel tank installed. (Auxillary fuel cell vendor is "Tour Tank" in Tucson, has a Web site)
