Re: Aftermarket Horn
It's probably better to put the relay under the seat. Aside from the weatherproofing issue raised above (although there are weatherproof versions of those automotive relays--Aerostich sells one example), the total voltage drop will probably be lower if you provide your own wire. That's because there's a voltage drop inside BMW's electronic control module, and because BMW is notoriously frugal in their use of copper. I'd suggest at least 14 gauge wire for the feed to the horn.

Ok...under the seat.. and 14 gauge cable...Thanks Neils !
But !
is the Centech fuse boxe relay can do the exact same job
than the Relay Kit twistedthrottle.com sale with the Stebel Nautilus ?

Re: Aftermarket Horn
Frede, I don't know what you mean by a relayed slot from the centech fuse box. I have a centech fuse box and I had no idea of a relayed slot. I get +12 from the fuse box to the relay. Also I get the impulse voltage from the + on the original horn wire to the relay. The relay is there so all of the current doesn't have to travel through the little horn button. I think I used 14 gauge wire. Maybe 16. It was large and I was feeling like it was over kill. But there it is now and it works like armageddon.

Re: Aftermarket Horn
Celticus ! thanks... but I just don't figure out the way things are connected all together... THE ELECTRICAL DIAGRAM of it,,, the whole pictuuuure !
I have plenty of relays that came with my accessories and I was thinking maybe the Centech relay is meant to do the job for all the other relays. (by the way ! where will I be able to install all those relays if the centech relay can't do the job for all ?)
I just don't understand anything of the way the whole system has to be plugged...I just can't visualize it
I have this AP-2 Centech ---> http://www.centechwire.com/catalog/panels/ap2.shtml
and this Relay --> http://www.centechwire.com/catalog/panels/ap130.shtml
For god sake !
it will be great if someone could post a nice electrical diagram
that implement the Centech in it plus some switches and a few accessories.
Just to show on our Forum a study case simulation of a safe install...

Re: Aftermarket Horn
Frede,
I don't use the Centech fuse box, I have a much cheaper fuse arrangement that I bought from the Powerlet people. I have a total of five auxiliary circuits: auxiliary lights, horn, battery charger, heat-troller/electric vest, and garage door opener. I'd be happy to send you (and anyone else) a copy of my wiring diagram if it would be helpful, but I don't want to post it to the board.
PM me if you want it, and include your email address.

The kit was supplied loose, so no BMW part number. Nippy's URL is below. Just go to "R1200R" in the orange listing on left of screen and work your way through the accessories. It's Page 5 if you want to skip ahead, but I can never help myself and just have to browse.
By the way, although we're not talking headlights here, I also bought the Phillips H11 crystal vision globes. Huge difference ... makes the stock light feel like a candle.

I would like to hear more about the Phillips H11 crystal vision globes. Perhaps you should start a new topic or we can talk about it here.
Are they really that much better?

Re: Aftermarket Horn
This is like the post that never ends - but here's some info that may be of interest to people adding horns.
I think this is what we want, I ordered today but will take a few days to get here.
BMW Part Number 83 30 0 402 344
Which is tool number 0-610-619
Thanks to Rusty at Max BMW for taking the time to help me get the real number (BMW part Number)
BTW: I think I just ordered the only one they had.

VERY cool if that's the right repair connector! Looking forward to your report on plugging it in.

Re: Aftermarket Horn
I installed a Stebel Dual tone compact air horn from Twisted Throttle. I couldn't get it to fit in the same manner as other posters, so I devised my own method. After removing the charcoal canister, I made a bracket out of stainless steel to go between the two outside mounting points of the canister bracket. I placed rubber washers between my new bracket and the mounting points to prevent movement. I also used nuts with nylon inserts to prevent them from loosening. I decided to leave the stock horn in place. I tapped into the wire for the stock horn to activate my new horn relay. The new horn relay is mounted under the seat.
The Stebel is very loud. There is also no noticeable delay in the horn activating. I would feel comfortable using this horn by itself. I just didn't see a need to remove the stock horn.

Re: Aftermarket Horn
While browsing Los Angeles to find some guys aware about accessories install on the "R" I have heard a few time that it was smarter to relocate the charcoal canister rather than removing it.
The reason invoked was, as at least 2 mechanics told me : "Beside the emission regulation issue the charcoal canister keep The computer informed of certain chemicals parameters... without Charcoal canister one side of the engine will not run the same way" Go figure what you guys on this forum thinks about that
But me I am completely ignorant in that matter... and many others
by the way...
Yes indeed Dauntless it seems very clean... by chance this week I found a young BMW mechanic that is familiar with Centech install, after market horn, auxiliary lights etc etc on can-bus beemer's (He's doing the install at home)

Re: Aftermarket Horn
After removing my canister I found that my bike was actually faster! I found that I am more intelligent and also more clever.
To be truthful I found not one whit of noticeable difference. The European models don't have canisters at all.
I relocated my canister to my storage shed. it seems happy there. Any stray emissions from my weed eater are eliminated by it's constant vigilance.

Even if I know "poopoo" about it....Technically speaking is the computer or certain sensors receiving, processing or analyzing any information's coming from chemicals going through the charcoal canister ?

OK Frederic: Just how do they suggest relocating the canister? Any specifics?

Re: Aftermarket Horn
Ok Mike : You know how they can be sometimes in Southern California...they say stuff just like that... have no clue on the next issue and just tells you "We'll find another location"... one said on previous years the canister was somewhere else in the rear area and they moved it in front.
He think that he might be able to relocate it back in the rear area, like in the old time so to speak.
Even one guy said...."Removing your canister will easily void my warranty in case of engine problems"

Re: Aftermarket Horn
I guess it would follow that using an aftermarket horn (ie: cutting into the wiring harness) or God forbid, adding auxiliary lights with wire strung all over the bike and non-stock relays under the seat would cancel the warranty if you had an electrical problem (like the battery going bad).FredeR1200Ric wrote:

I've been back for service once after my canister 'fell off' and no one said anything. The bike was on the computer to check the throttle bodies (or whatever they check) and it didn't know the canister was gone.
PS: There might be one problem: Not paying your taxes apparently isn't a problem, nor is being in this country illegally, selling drugs might get you a year or probation, shooting a cop could be a problem unless you can prove that a cop yelled at you when you were a child. BUT - I'm sure if the FEDS find out that you removed a smog device you will be hauled off to jail for an extended time, your bike will be confiscated and your family will be held up to shame and ridicule for the rest of their lives. I just hope we don't have any 'Tree Huggers' aboard that will turn us in.
