Brake fluid will do nothing to fix the brushes in the motor.
I heard from a reliable source that Modulemaster is now replacing the brushes for $150/unit. Seems a good discount from the $1,600-2,000 dealers are quoting. Proves that if you put an outrageous price on a repair, someone will make a good dollar figuring out how to do it cheaper.

Update: Finally had the chance to get the bike to the dealer. The verdict... a failed rear speed sensor was causing all the problems ( Failed ABS, ASC, speedometer, directional auto cancel). Fortunately this was warranty work so the cost to fix was nothing. The sensor is a $92 part according to the fische.

GBag - glad to hear, and glad you got back to us with the resolution. Lots cheaper then a new ABS modulator..

Well I finally got the ABS fixed on my bike (2007 R1200R). I got it repaired at Module Masters. I dealt with Tyler. He was quick and complete with his answers. A great guy and great company to deal with. I saved $600 in labor and $1500 in parts. I have only had a chance to ride the bike a short way but it was long enough to confirm that the ABS was fixed and working properly.
Labor and parts from Module Masters was closer to $300 but still a bargan.

In May I had my ABS module fail ('08 R12R 9300 miles) and after the season, I had my mechanic deal with ModuleMaster this winter.
The whole process of the rebuild took 2½ weeks and cost a total of $852.82 with shipping and labor. I consider this a bargain since I was quoted $1699.57 (US) for the OEM part alone.
Also, Module Master guarantees the rebuild for 5 years and BMW only covers 2 years with a new part.

How involved is removal and reinstallation of the module? A DIY job for the moderately experienced?

I am moderately experienced and I got through it. I swear they mounted the ABS to the frame and then put everything else on around it. But I got it done.

It's not just BMW that has ABS problems. A friend with a 06 Yamaha FJR had the ABS pump fail recently. It was well kept, dealer serviced with 26,000 miles. ABS unit $1200. Dealer said Yamaha would not consider a good will replacement. Dealer was willing to sell a new pump at their cost, still expensive.
Yamaha customer service would not return two calls. So much for customer service.
What was done was the dealer ordered brake lines for a non ABS model FJR. Machine back in service for $200.
