OK, the subject line is a bit misleading.
I need some advice on doing an oil change on an HD Dyna-Glide or Dyna-Wide (not sure which), not my R.

Here's the background: A buddy of mine has this bike. He hasn't changed the oil in the 3 years he's owned it, though he did get the 1,000 or 1.2k service done at the dealer, so the oil's been changed at least once. He only has about 2,500 miles in total on, but that oils been in there a oretty long time. He can't get it into the dealer for a couple of weeks and I convinced him that we could easily do it in his garage.

I know that there's a lot of guys who either ride or used to ride HD, so I'll ask some basic questions:
1) HD is dry clutch right, so I can use an automotive oil like Mobil 1?
2)Assume that the drain plug is a common metric or SAE size and not something you need a special tool for?
3) Is the filter accessable or do you need a special wrench to remove?

YOu seem to make an assumption that is not correct. There are three cavities that use oil.. one for the engine, one for the primary chain and clutch, and another for the gear box. You do not need to change all three. You can change oil in any one, two or all independently.

I not only ride a H-D I maintain my own Road Glide. (Love it)

1. The Clutch is a wet clutch. Does not matter. Use Mobil 1 15W-50 in as we H-D people say... all 3 holes. Meaning engine oil, Primary Chain Case (which includes the clutch), and the Gear Box/Transmission.

2. Yes the Oil and Gear box drain plugs are standard. I believe a 5/8ths.

3. Oil filter is that large round thing on the front of the engine.... Accessable from the left hand side. Easiest way to remove is to buy the oil filter wrench from H-D (cheap). The BMW oil filter wrench may work with a long extension on your socket wrench, BE FREAKING CAREFUL of the crank position sensor which is just in the way of the removal of the oil filter. Easy to damage if you are not looking for it.

Tip- fashion a drip pan out of cardboard and put it under the filter before you loosen the filter. This "funnel" can be used to direct the drips outward to the left of the bike. Sounds wierd, but easy once you look at what I am saying.

If you drain and replace the primary chain case oil, be careful not to over fill once you are ready to fill. Add 1 quart ONLY of oil. OBTW the drain hole is below the lowest screw that holds the chain case cover, which is that very large round thing just where the riders footboard/peg is located. It is commonly known as the "Derby Cover".

Again- use the same oil in all three holes.

I just saw a Mobil 1 brand 20-50w full synthetic for V-trims, wet clutch. Very expensive, $9 per qt. But hey,if you change your oil every 3 years, might as well use it.
