Final Drive and Transmission fluid question

Post by Buckster »

My 24k service is coming up. I am going to change the final drive and transmission oil myself thanks to Mike Cams knowhow in the FAQ section.
Question is, what oil is recommended? The 75w-140 or the 80w-90?
The other question is, I want to add the Moly for added protection but there are several Moly lubricants on thier site. Is the 80w-90 the one to use or am I to use the moly gear oil treatment?
Lastly, is synthetic a good idea or not?
Thanks for any help. I am not much of a mechanic...but I going to learn!

85W-90 is probaby the best choice. Going synthetic can't hurt, and most people switch to it by 24k miles. I recently read a good article on this, maybe in the latest ON magazine? When I get home I'll look for it and send it to you.

I went with the 75/140 (synth) at the recommendation of a trusted tech at my shop. Switched at the 12K service.

Just did my second fluid change last weekend... at 26K

I hope I was not incorrect in doing so (I searched this forum for what to put in), but I used Mobil 1 75-140w Full Synthetic for the tranny and Mobil 1 75-90w Full Synthetic for the rear end.

I just did my 12,000 service.

My reccomondation is for what Yellowfinch has done. 75-140 in the tranny 75-90 in the rear. Also a good idea is to change the rear end with every oil change.

I also use Mobil Synthetic. I don't really care though. I will use any Major name brand. I don't believe that ANY brand or additive will prevent failures. If the parts are lousy, or assembly poor, your bike will break down, sooner or later. Your oil choice isn't going to prevent a breakdown.
I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray...

I just changed mine for my 24K service and the dealer recommended 80-90 dino oil.

very easy to do.

the tranny oil looked pretty dirty when it came out but the FD oil looked brand new.
