When I bought my R, it came with two seats. One is clearly the high one, but I don't know if the other one is the standard or low seat. I had assumed it was the standard height, but it looks awfully low relative to the rear seat when installed on the bike. How can I tell which one I have? Both seat pans have the same part #.

Boy, it does not help when they put the same part # on different parts.

There have been questions posted about how many seats are available for this bike, and I think the consensus answer was there are just two: the standard (low) and the high seat. I have both and the high seat is about 2" higher than the standard low seat.

shows three distinct seats with three different part numbers. Unfortunately, I can't find any numbers other than the one molded into the seat pan, which is the same for both of my seats.

These are obviously the overall seat heights from the ground. I assume the bike is on its wheels, but is there a common point on the saddle where the distance is measured? My lower seat dips down in the front, while the taller one is basically straight across the top. Do I measure at the lowest point?

The reason I'm trying to sort this out is so I can accurately describe the seat if I decide to sell it.

Center of seat (side to side) at lowest point (front to back).

Getting the measurement is a challenge - hold bike upright, lay level bar across seat, measure to ground.

Depending on tires and preload setting, your measurements may not match BMW's spec.

.....but if you have the high seat for sure, the difference should be about 20 mm or 40 mm no matter how the bike is set up.

If you're not certain one is the high seat, and the difference is 40 mm, then you have confirmed that you have high and low. If the difference is only 20 mm, then it's either high/normal or normal/low.

How about this, then? The difference in height is in the padding above the pan, right? I slid a steel rod under the strap on the pillion seat, held it flat, and measured the distance from the rod to the deepest point in the seat, which was about 65 mm. I'm guessing here, but shouldn't the other two seats vary +/- 20 mm in that dimension?

There are some pics somewhere showing all three seats. There is a definite difference in how they look. The high one is obviously very straight across and the low one is obviously very "dippy"...

I've had the two lower ones, but not the highest.

I had the two middle ones.
