Oil and the Boxer - Revisited

The intent of this post is to provide the BMW boxer owner with the information necessary to understand what is the fundamental relationship between oil and the Boxer engine design. Hopefully after perusing the document, the owner will be in possession of information that will assist with the proper lubrication selection at the minimal cost that will supply the engine longevity based on the owner’s ridding habits.

First let’s identify some terms:

Owner’s manual – This document provides “basic” recommendations to the new owner. I emphasize basic because one has to understand that these bikes are sold both in Alaska as well as Tierra del Fuego and the lubrication requirements are different in either of the locations. It is a guideline, period.

Air cooled engine – Older engine design that enjoys the benefits of simplicity and fewer parts. However it does give up some performance primarily because the range of operational temperatures is greater than that of a water cooled engine. Air cooled engines can never reach the “tight” clearances of water cooled ones, there for the efficiency will always suffer.

Nikasil – Electrodeposited nickel/silicon carbide matrix which when applied to aluminum cylinders has shown some excellent wear characteristics. Please note that this coating is very specific to the Boxer design. The logic being is that if one makes the cylinder hard to wear, the rings will be the sacrificial material; however it is much easier and less costly to change rings than cylinders. This is one of the reasons while the boxer engines can go 200,000 miles (with proper maintenance) on the original cylinders.

Break in – A phenomena usually associated with operation and temperature cycles within the engine, that allow the rings to conform to the cylinder in such a way that it minimizes “blowby” or passage of combustion gases into the oil as well as preventing the oil to gain passage to the combustion chamber. Boxers typically use a significant amount of oil during the break in period. Let it be known that the way the bike is ridden plays a tremendous effect on the duration of the “break in” period, read oil consumption. Some owners will complete the “break in” within the first 5000 miles (stopped oil consumption) others have run 20,000 to 30,000 miles and haven’t completed the “break in”. Let me suffice to say that there are various schools of thought on how to break in a boxer, but that is a topic for another post.

Oil – A liquid whose primary function is to lubricate and act as a heat transfer medium in internal combustion engines, amongst other uses.

Organic oil – Hydrocarbon derived (petroleum based). Two organizations, API (American Petroleum Institute) and SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) regulate the grades and additive packages in the oil.

Organic oil, operational temperature – The rule of thumb is to keep engine oil temperature between 180 F to 220 F to attain maximum engine life. Yes, one can exceed 220 F with the understanding that the rotating parts will wear a bit more than normal. Once you exceed 260 F the oil viscosity begins to suffer and the engine life will be reduced significantly.

Synthetic oil – Artificially synthesized lubricants such as esters and polyalpha-olefins. These lubricants, because of their highly refined state, typically exhibit improved viscosity and a wider temperature range at temperature extremes than organic oils. In addition, these lubricants have improved efficiency over the organic variety; therefore they don’t degrade as quickly as the organic oils. It is very important to note that there is no difference in the retention of particulate matter, meaning that the filter will deteriorate (plug) at the same rate as that on the organic lubricant.

Synthetic oil, operational temperature – This oil has improved lubricity across its operational range. Typical range is defined between 170 F to 260 F. Once past 300 F, viscosity begins to suffer with end results similar to those of organic oil.

Grades – The grades have to do with oil viscosity. There are single grades like 30W and multigrade like 10W30. Basically the first one has one viscosity; the second one has a range of viscosities which change according to ambient temperature. It is very important to understand that multigrade oils, because they are a blend one can never reach the extremes. So in a 10W30 the oil will never be as viscous as a single 10W or as viscous as a 30 W.

Additives – Oils used on internal combustion engines use additive packages to minimize sludge, corrosion, mitigate metal to metal contact (zinc), along with friction reducers (moly) and extreme pressure compounds, amongst others. Some of the above are included with the oil to reduce the by-products of combustion.

OK so what now?

Break in - Suggest that one completes the break in with organic oil before going to synthetic. Synthetic oil has more lubricity than organic oil and therefore will hamper the break in period. You want the rings to reach maximum sealing against the cylinder wall as quickly as possible; this in turn will reduce the amount of oil consumption significantly. The break in is accomplished faster if the owner revs through the gears and stays away fro steady state operation.

Organic or synthetic – That will depend on the ridding style and the frequency of use. For instance; if one uses the bike every day, runs through the gears and will run 30 minutes or more, organic will be my choice and there will not be any abnormal wear issues. On the other hand if the bike is used occasionally, not started daily and the runs are short…..not enough run time to warm the oil, there are benefits to using synthetic because of the superior lubricity.

Cost – In reality, there is not much of a cost difference. Let’s assume that the synthetic is 2x the cost of organic and assume that the organic oil is changed every 3,000 miles. So in the case of the synthetic you can probably run 6,000 miles before changes, although, because of the particle retention the filter will have to be changed at 3,000 mile intervals. So in the long run the cost is a washout.

Extreme conditions – If the ambient temperature is consistently above 90 F, I would suggest synthetic oil as the lubricant, since it enjoys a wider temperature range than the organic oil.

And last but not least

What should be my oil level – Middle of the window (sight glass) after a minimum of a 20 minute run, 3 to 5 minutes on the side stand and then onto the center stand. Come back when the bike is cold and check the level. Never run the bike below the lower circle as it will bring unpleasant and costly results, nor higher than the middle of the glass, as you will be burning the oil of at the combustion chamber increasing the potential of carbon deposits.

In some remote instances one might run for 20 minutes or more, however the ambient temperature might be low enough that it will not allow the engine to open the thermo valve to the oil coolers, therefore trapping some oil there from the previous ride.
To your surprise you will find that upon checking, the oil level it is fairly low and in turn you will add oil until the middle of the window is reached. After the following ride you then find out the oil level is now at the top of the window…Arrgghhh…..the oil coolers path opened up and the entrapped oil went back into the system………I rest my case.

Hi I just stopped by my local BMW dealer and asked these questions of the sevice tech. When will my 03 R1150R with 4500 miles stop using oil? should I switch to syntheticat the next oil change at 6000 miles or wait untill it stops using oil His answer to the first question was oil usage depends on various factors but oil use should stop after the break in period which he stated should be between 6000-12,000 miles which agrees with everything I have read on this site however his answer to the 2nd question was confusing he stated that because the 1150 boxer engine is built with such hard materials synthetic oil is not needed or recommended in fact he stated that the boxer engine is not fond of synthetic oils at all. this statement is contrary to every thing I have read on this site. I was ready to change to synthetic at the next oil change Now I know many people on this site have used and are using synthetic with no issues I'm not trying to start another round of oil aurguments I'm just confused on the whole dino vs synthetic thing

Here's my thoughts on oil consumption. Sure, an engine can eat oil during the break in while the rings are still seating, however there are other factors. Fuel dilution can be one cause, and related to that, low flash points. When this starts happening, your engine is going to burn off some of the oil, and it will seem like you are consuming it. A synthetic protects against this due to much higer flash points and still having good viscosity at higher temperatures (as boxermania pointed out). Furthermore, the additive/detergent packages in synethetic motor oils are generally of higher quality than their dino counterparts.

Great post, boxermania.

I'd be curious if anyone has done a UOA (used oil analysis) of their motor oil to see how the engine wears on oil.

What a great article. I probably would not have bought my RR if I had read this first, and since owning an RR and hating the oil issue I'll never buy another, though I loved my RR, that oil issue always pissed me off. Not a knock against the bike, and my flame suit is hanging in the closet...

I took my R1150RT in for a 32,000 miles service, & the mechanic pointed out that BMW GB have changed their recommendation.

It used to be Castrol GP, a 10W/40, with GPS semi-synthetic as an option at 12,000 miles onward.

Now their recommendation is Castrol Actevo 20W50, a mineral oil.

That suits me, because my old oil-heads also use 20W50, so less bottles to keep in the garage.

To reply to hirsch, or anyone else for that matter, just had the 12K service done on my Rockster, 2004, probably at the same dealer in Pittsburgh you went to. Have used synthetic lube in tranny and final drive since 6K, questioned the service folks as to using synthetic, they have available the Mobil1 4T racing oil. I futher questioned the counter people becuse I buy my own filter, etc. and do all this myself, and they said no problem with using regular Mobil1 15-50 or 20-50, because they know I change every spring, but not more than 6K. it has something to do with a dry clutch that we can use this with no problems.

Same here!! That oil issue has been a pain in the A##, My R has used oil from day one, I can get 300 to 350 miles and I have to add 8oz, of oil, I have no Idea where it is going, the bike does not smoke, and there are no puddles, I thought I was overfilling but the airbox is dry. I check per BMW instructions side stand, center stand, I never add oil if I can see it in the glass, I have kept a milage record and at or around 350, mils (sometimes less) it is 8 oz, (sometimes more) it doesn't matter if I ride it hard, or I take it easy, I have talked with several Mach. and it is something I just might have to live with, BTW it is an "02" (purchased new) andhas 30,000 mi. I really like the bike except for this issue, I think I would have a hard time selling it, with it haveing this problem, Den

Well, I'm touched by all the responses and some of the specific experiences. I will try to answer them all.

machew01, towerworker and iowabeakster - Thanks, thanks and thanks for your kind support.

R4R&R - If you are past the break in period you can use synthetic if you so desire. Synthetic oil, due to it's superior lubricity, will, under normal circumstances delay the break in period.

hirsch - The BMW tech is partially right; the coating on the boxer aluminum cylinders is very hard and provides exceptional durability. The statement that the boxer engine is not fond of synthetics needs further clarification, may I suggest that you ask him to be more specific. From the engineering perspective why would you not benefit from added lubricity (less friction, less wear) and extended temperature range (beneficial to air cooled engines. I suggest you ask him specifically why it is not recomended.

BTW, all of the current BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, Infinity autos come from the factory with synthetic oil....why, because they run tighter clearances and higher engine temps where the synthetic operates better than the dino oil.

Have not seen the need for UOA, most of the time a good cursory look is sufficient for a street machine.

adg44- Thanks. The boxer engine has a more difficult time with oil control, because the cylinders are on the horizontal plane. Oil can easily get to the cylinder and doesn't have gravity, like an inline engine, to help drain the oil. Synthetic oil has better lubricity than the typical dino and an extended temperature range.

martin - If memory serves me well the Owners Manual calls for 20W50 oil for the boxer. I'm sure that extreme climatic conditions will support a thinner oil. One obscure fact of synthetic oil is that it doesnt perform well in bikes with wet clutch this is so because the polymer attaches to the clutch discs and reduces the clutch effectiveness. Maybe BMW is moving away from the synthetic because the boxer is the only bike on their line-up with a dry clutch.

rockstercliff - You are currect regarding synthetics and wet clutch.....see underlined item above.

mnnden - There are two reasons for your predicament. My first choice is that you ridding style is very laid back (no offense intended), short shifting and staying below 5,000 rpm. If this is not so, then you have problems with your oil scrapper rings.....
If you want to lower the consumption, get the engine to hit the rev limiter(happy zone as Patrick used to call it) and let it slow down to about 3500 rpm and repeat the cycle a couple of times. Ride keeping from shifting to the next gear at least until you hit 5500 - 6000 rpm. Of course you can't do that in top gear, so choose an empty road and do it on 2nd or 3erd gear. If you do this every time you take the bike out it should get the oil consumption significantly below what it is now. I also had an 02, and used the whole rpm band, my bike was broken in before it turned 5,000 miles.

I think I have acknowledged all of the posters....... 8) 8)

Not so obscure to us VMax owners who stay away from Synth for just that reason. Good writeup. I like regular Spectro BMW 20-50. Its expensive enough and I haven't nailed down what oils are still synthetic that call themselves synthetic. Its crazy out there.

Edit:Oh, and IMO some boxer 1100/1150s will use oil forever no matter how many R's (Its also International Talk Like a Pirate Day, today) you manage to wind them up to. Its manageable.

I thought the wet clutch bikes had to use specific oil with friction modifiers in the oil? I always used Golden Spectro synthetic on my previous bikes without any problems.

I thought the wet clutch bikes had to use specific oil with friction modifiers in the oil? I always used Golden Spectro synthetic on my previous bikes without any problems.
For as few miles as I run that bike, I use the Yamaha regular 20W40 oil. I'm not well versed enough to know what works best outside of mfg recommendations.

Just the opposite. Wet clutch bikes (of which I've owned many) will work fine with synthetic oils. What causes clutch problems is friction modifiers that are present in some oils.

How to tell what oils contain the friction modifiers that make wet clutches slip? It's easy (at least in the USA): Look at the round API seal on the oil bottle. If the words "Energy Conserving" are on the label, do not use that oil in a bike with a wet clutch. Virtually all automotive oils with a viscosity range of 30 or more points, e.g., 10W-40, 20W-50, are NOT energy conserving, and so are safe in wet clutch applications.

I'm afraid that I can't respond to your question, although it makes sense, being that the "steels" and the friction discs that make a clutch in motorcycles are inmersed in oil.

I have always used automotive oil of the specified grade in my wet clutch bikes with nay a hint of trouble.

I once tried Royal Purple on one of my bikes, which was getting close to needing a clutch replacement and it made it much smoother....errr, less effective to the point that it accelerated the clutch replacement. 8)
