Well I have just purchased my very first new bike and it’s the R1200R.
WOW….and I’m only 50……..

It coming with a lot of toys, but the decision I have to make is do I go with the high seat, or the low seat..

I’m 6’-1” tall and about 195 lbs
My pant leg is 34

I was thinking about the high seat, but reading a few of the posts, not sure now.
The bike comes with the standard sport windshield.
I don’t want to have a lot of wind, but I’m used to riding am old 750 Honda without a windshield…


Any suggestions? Low seat, high seat. The low seat will lower me, but will my knees stick up…
If I purchase a larger windshield, it will be a while.
Got to pay for this thing……and it’s going to be great….

I'm 5'6" and I got the tall seat because I like a lot of legroom. I came off a DL1000 V-Strom which spoiled me with its roomy and comfortable riding position. I still had to get barbacks and a Suburban Machinery footpeg lowering kit so I could recapture the ergos of the V-Strom. I can't flatfoot with the high seat, but it's pretty close. I have no complaints about the tall seat for comfort, but I have yet to do a good all day ride due to the weather. I think you'll appreciate the extra legroom of the tall seat and you can always send it to Sargent to be redone if you need changes. Or get a sheepskin buttpad or Airhawk etc.

IMHO------well maybe not so humble. Do not get the low seat. I'm 5'10" with a 32 inch inseam and I have the middle seat, its fine, but, if I get a chance to horse swap for a tall version, let the swapping begin.

Given your inseam (and despite what people seem to think - HEIGHT means nothing for seat height) - get the high seat. If you're buying from a dealer (sounds like you are..) make a deal with them that you can swap the seat within ## days if it doesn't work out for you and if you keep the seat looking brand new. Can't see why a dealer would not agree..

I have ducks' disease (a-hem too close to the ground) and use the low seat. Surprisingly comfortable - the high seat was very uncomfortable. An Airhawk eases long-day ache.

Knees - definitely an issue with the low seat. I added the Suburban Machinery page lowering kit in pre-delivery - solves teh knee issue for me: http://picasaweb.google.com.au/billstan ... 7446560322

I have the same measurements as you. (Errr, at least that you posted.)

The tall seat is the way to go. Until you get an aftermarket seat. I haven't posted about mine because I have yet to put enough miles on it. In either case, to keep your knees and hips happy I recommend a tall seat.

Even with my short inseam (30"), I like the high (or is it the standard?) seat.

When I demo'd the bike, the bike I rode had a low seat on it, and with my bad knees I found my feet were a bit too close to my arse.

Since I bought my bike used, and since it came with a seat higher than the 'low' seat, I'm pretty happy with the level of comfort.

My confusion stems from the fact that I'm believing there are actually 3 seats - the low seat, a "standard" height seat, and a "high" seat. If that's not the case, then I assume the standard and high seats are the same.

We're about the same size, and I'm pretty happy with the standard seat. I also find that the sport shield does an adequate job for most of my needs.

There are three height seats..

Does anyone know how to tell them apart without having them side-by-side?

The stock number? It should be different, but I don't recall off the top of my head where it is on the seat.

The part numbers are, of course, different. But AFAIK the numbers don't appear anywhere on the seats.
