BMW R1200R R1150R/T F800 K1200R R1100R/T R1250R RnineT Message Board

I am a new member to this forum and am currently looking to buy a R1150RT in Sydney.

Does any one have any tips for buying?

There are a few ex police and ambulance bikes around, some with quite low mileage i.e 30,000km to 50,000km and some with higher such as 100,000km.

Should such bikes be avoided? Is a R1150RT with 100,oookm on the clock O.K? Provided service history is accounted for?

What should I look for and what should i be looking to spend? (I'd like to stick around the $12k mark

Also, could anyone give me a rough figure for minor and major servicing costs?

Any advice appreciated.

I bought my R1150R from a local police officer. He's a motorcycle cop and his service rig is a R1150RT. He freely admitted that he's much harder on his service bike than he would ever think of being on his personal bikes. He said (with a smile) that he could usually smell burnt clutch several times a day. He said his bike had the clutch replaced at about 25K miles or so. He also said that the BMW's are very tough bikes, they take extreme daily abuse and yet they continue to be stone reliable.

Anytime you buy a service bike, even with low miles, you have to assume that it's been ridden hard and put away wet. They should be priced accordingly.

Damn straight. I've had techs tell me they wouldn't even buy one themselves for fear of encountering problems even they couldn't forsee. Just not worth the expense of parts, and their time and outlay.
