Cam Tensioner Upgrade-One question

Post by bmwr1150rbmw »

I was inspired by Boxer's thread in the Mechanical section to complete this upgrade. See below. I also used step by step directions from Advrider. Boxer's part list was a good first step and right on. I called a dealer and they had all the parts in stock. Trust me when I say, if I did this, you can too.

I used both of these resources:

In the Mechanical section:

Question: Should all 'clatter' from the the head disappear? I still have some of the same 'clatter' but it is vastly improved...

Good job.....I'll bet you feel good about the upgrade. It is very satisfying to be able to perform some maintenance on our bikes as it saves some coins and improves the owner bike relationship.

Did you see the crud on the butterfly of the ADV GS? was yours as cruddy?....that needs to be cleaned out. It can be done with selective spraying of carburetor/FI cleaner with everything in place, just slide back the airbox to the TB plastic pipe.

The valves will still make some noise no matter what you do. The tensioner mainly (from what I understand) cures the initial rattle-rattle at start up.

I did notice that in the Advrider pics and scoped mine out with a flashlight. The sides looked clean but I did see some black on the air shutter (not sure of the proper term) I did not try to clean that part but left it alone.
