Harley riders use suede and leather. BMW riders are supposed to make theirs out of Cortex textile.
Get with the program.

That's the BMW shop tool version. The plastic one that comes in the toolkit is around $3.

Here is the part # 12 12 2 306 064 for the plastic one, called ADAPTER S
Regular price is $3.00 Ask your dealer to order one for you.
Maybe your salesman was looking at the wrong number or was trying to sell you a valve cover.
Good Luck.

The plastic one is crap - not worth $3. If you don't have one, get a metal one like the Marc Parnes. Well worth the extra $$$. I've used the Marc Parnes one and it does make a difference.

Depends if you figure out how to use it properly or not.

The trick is to get a short length of 1" strap and pull on the cross bar, rather than the looped outer curve.

I've heard that before, but my experience has been different. I've used it a handful of times and the plastic one works fine for me. You do have to twist it a little back and forth, and I might even use a second hand to gently squeeze/hold the base on the tool on the end of the plug wire while pulling. It works, and for me, the Marc Parnes is not worth the extra $20+. YMMV.

I've been able to get by with the plastic one, and I've helped others out that didn't have any tool (plastic or metal) by using some basic hand-tools and finesse. I wouldn't spend my money on the Marc Parnes one unless I didn't have one at all, and wanted to have one on a trip. I've used the Marc Parnes one at a local tech day and it does work much better than the plastic one, but I currently don't have a need for it so I'm keeping my $20.

For an every day use in the shop, I would go for Marc Parnes tool for $25.00
For the average motorcycle rider, the plastic tool will outlive the motorcycle.
If you used this tool more then 25 times, your are about ready to trade in your bike

Being a former wrench, I appreciate good tools. Having the right tool for the job makes life a lot easier. Have I jury rigged or used a tool not designed to do that particular job, of course I have, the results are not always what you hoped for. Thank goodness Snap On doesn't make that tool, it would cost $150 then. Having used the plastic POS that BMW provides, it is less then satisfactory, will it work? Most of the time, should BMW have supplied something better? Absolutely!

Changed plugs on my '03 several times over 42K and once so far on my 04 and always used the supplied tool that came with the bike. Never had a problem.
