NOISY TAPPETS

Post by b12bandit »

Hi,

Not sure if you call them tappets or valve clearances or valve lash or whatever over in USA.

I have an 02 1150R. When the engine is stone cold, it starts on the button and is strangely quiet. Virtually no 'mechanical' noise at all. However, at the end of a ride, the top end of both cylinders rattle - sounds like a machine gun being fired.

So - cold engine = quiet. Hot engine = noisy.

Is this normal?

Pete,
What viscosity of oil you running in yr bike and how many miles on it?
If you are running 10w40 try changing to 20w50 to see if it lessens the rattle. Could be that the lower viscosity oil is causing less pressure to your cam chain tensioner pistons at idle/low rpm's, causing them to rattle.

Hot Engine = Thin Oil

Unless you're running synthetic. A hot engine also means a larger engine, so the lash increases.

After changing tensioner the engine remained quiet after long rides as well :)
