Hi,

Due to terrible withdraws in the dead of winter with the painful urge to ride, I'm finally am getting around to introducing myself here. I have been lurking a little since I purchased my first BMW (2006 R1150R - 20,000+ km's) last Sept. I just wanted to get a feel for the forum and learn a bit about my new bike. It's been really informative to say the least. I'm glad I finally signed in.
My bike sits in the garage in hibernation just waiting for the snow to melt down a bit (its been another snowy and salty winter here ) The salt is the killer for me... I did manage to put on 4 or 5000 km's before the white stuff came and all I can say is I absolutely love the bike!! It had been a dream of mine to own a BMW for quite a long time. My previous bike was an '83 Yamaha 650 Maxim. Great bike and very reliable but I just needed something more, and besides, I'm a huge fan of German engineering! I looked at other BMW models but literally stumbled upon this one and have no regrets. Price was right, it was very well taken care of by the PO and felt like a new bike. It has been a dream come true for me.

Well, that's my introduction. I look forward to learning more and hope I can give back as much as I can. Maybe this will help with the withdraws... you know... reaching out to others who suffer too.

Welcome aboard! I bought my 04 about a year ago, and the more I drive it the more I like it. It's a great bike. My last bike was an 81 Yamaha 400, so this was a big leap for me. No regrets. This is a great resource so don't be afraid to seek out help or advice. I also feel your winter pain. It's -18 this morning, vehicles rolled over and in ditches on the way to work, so it's definitely hibernation time for the RR.

I sympathize with you regarding the weather. Though the temps are not nearly as low here in SE PA, there has been a lot of frozen precipitation (known in this area as "wintry mix") over the past couple of weeks, making serious riding a fond memory for the time being.

Good luck with the new ride and think about the Beemer Bash (see the Group Rides page) this spring.

Spring is just around the corner, yes... but with that said, I do love winter. I grew up in a WAY colder climate then T.O. so that doesn't bother me. Its actually quite funny how people react to -15C here. Its known as an "EXTREME COLD ALERT!!" Quite funny actually when I've experienced -40C quite a bit growing up and that's before the windchill factor

Yeah, I guess you're right

2 months?!! If we're lucky.... I can't wait to ride "down the street" and "take the on-ramp" and of course, head out to the twisties on my R!!

2 months eh... well lets start praying to Mr. Groundhog for next month Maybe he'll grow some bollocks and not run back down his hole if he sees his shadow. Then its all good right... right?

First off: Seamripper - welcome to the forum! This is not the largest or most active motorcycle forum out there but there is a base of knowledgeable riders on here that can answer virtually any question about your 1150R! And some good friends and riding buddies to be found.

And I feel a little guilty. Although I live in the mountains, I have managed a few pretty good rides already this year (pretty good as in at least needing to gas up! ). Fortunately, the bike seldom goes more than 2 weeks without at least a short run! Actually, I feel lucky more than guilty!

Good to hear from you, I'm new to this site as well. I've been riding bikes all my life (52 years old now) and just bought a 04 r1150r in oct. 08. Love the bike. Lots of fun. My other bike is a 72 Norton Combat Commando, thing is it needs constant attention. The beemer is always ready for me, no worries. Had a 89 r80 for a while but thought something modern would be nice for a change and sold it to get the 04 r1150r. I'm still learning about it so that's why I come to this site.
I'll post some pics once if figure out how. BTW I'm an old tractor buff too, got 5 of them all IH hundred series.
I'm originally from Winnipeg Manitoba, so I know about -40, moved to Atlanta GA USA 2 years ago, you can ride here just about year round. Temps dont go much below -5C here.

Back on topic . . . . We all hope your snowed-in bikes are being fed by a Battery Tender (while they shiver in the garage).

Talk about riding year round . . . I hand deliver both my electric and water bills in both location's outdoor drop boxes, so my 20 mile ride saves 2 postage stamps. Last time it was warm enough to ride w/o my ski over-pants. Man, does it run great in the colder weather (after the engine is hot). Few bikes can impart such a big fat torque punch in the normal 2,500---5,000 RPM riding routine WITHOUT the bewildering vibration most of the other twins will give you.

I've got the Odyssey battery and hopefully will be installing this weekend along with the new quick disconnects I've got.
It's supposed to be real cold here in Atl this weekend.

Welcome! I too was new in the spring of 2008 just purchasing a 2002 R1150R. It is quite the addictive habit and you should be careful not to get to heavy into the tweaking phase. It will cost you all your spare change, but increase your love for riding and the bike.

Hope to hear some stories from you once the weather breaks.

Welcome Seamripper, I think you will really enjoy your R1150R and this group. There is a lot of help here, don't hesitate to ask.

Nice day for a ride here, summers are in some ways more difficult riding than now....but that is Arizona for you.

I am newish here as well, and also from Toronto. My '02 R is waiting not all that patiently in the garage. You can hear her softly moaning late at night as she tries to sleep.

I try to visit her every couple of days, but lately I am just sort of exacerbating the problem, I go into the garage, and instead of taking out the beemer, I take the bloody snowblower out for a ride! She's getting in a right München funk over that. What a fellow to do, shovel? Pffft!

Groundhog saw his shadow today, so that puts me out on the roads right around March 16th. Maybe I'll see you there? My R is a distinctive orange colour, what's yours?
