Different Seats? Heated Seats?

Post by HillCountryRider »

I just purchased a 2002 R1150R after having spend the last 280,000 miles on Airheads, most recently a 10 year love affair with a R80G/S that took me safetly and comfortably all over the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

So far the R1150R is awesome, simply awesome. I now have brakes that work! And suspension, a charging system and all the other 21 century updates!

But the seating position is way too cramped. The bike came with the stock low seat. I am looking at either a BMW high seat, or a Sargent.

My questions are....what are rider's experiences with different seats? (Personally I have never been a fan of Corbin having owned 1/2 dozen, poor materials and workmanship and terrible to deal with) and is the extra cost of a heated seat worth iT/

I am leaning towards a Sargent seat and wondering if the extra bucks for the heat option is worth it.

Thanks and awesome list you guys have here. Glad I discovered it!

I recently purchased a used Sargent seat, not so much for the butt comfort but because the cramped position was killing my knees. 500 to 600 miles days were possible but certainly my knees were the weak point in comfort. My seat was stock but had been inexpensively modified to level it out, possibly lowering it a little.

The difference is dramatic! Although I have yet to do a slab burning ride on the seat, I have gone through a tank at a time without having to even stretch out my legs to relieve knee pain! The extra 1"+ height has been great, more than making up for the lost of flat-footing the bike at a stop.

Oh, and the butt comfort is great too! :P And the fit of the Sargent is better than the stock seat. Good materials and build quality.

I have a Sargent on my 04 and really love it. I had an 03 with the stock seat and there is a world of difference. I wouldn't go back to the stock.

No experience with the heated seat but I imagine it would be nice.

The 04 Rockster had a low seat the first time I rode it. About a 185 mile ride and I was in agnoy. I have a 34 inch inseam. The seat made me slide forward, I would scoot back and then slide forward again. By the end of the ride my nuts were packed into my "A" hole, very uncomfortable. That was a deal breaker but I tried a standard seat and what a world of difference. I have to try an aftermarket seat, maybe a Mayer(?sp). I don't think a heated seat would be worth the money, but maybe for some.

OU812 - those foot rests cost a lot of money! More than a new Sargent seat! I would rather put the money in the seat and prop my legs up on the jugs!

And I see no point in a heated seat. My butt is the last thing to get cold on a ride. For the cost of a heated seat, an electric liner and gloves would do more good. IMO anyway. ;)

I bought a set used for $200 and sold a ruined set for $100. But they still worked fine. Sheepskin has done more for my rear then any custom seat I have bought or tried. My knees are really bad.

The sargent seat did not provide much in the way of additional leg room for me, but since you are starting with a low seat, you will probably see improvement. Either way, it is a much better seat than stock. You may want to try a cheaper alternative first to get some altitude. Maybe a sheepskin. I got an Airhawk, and that definitely did increase the leg room. Also extends the ride before the burn factor sets in.

+1 on the Airhwak. I use mine for extended rides.

I have a sargent on my 2002. LOVE IT. 13 hour day rides back to back - could have gone longer but everything else fatigued besides my seat and legs!

You are absolutely right that bang for the buck, a heated liner and gloves would spank the heated seat beyond belief. That being said, the appeal of the heated seat(along with my heated grips) to me is the fact that it is always there and there are no wires dangling around me and the bike. That to me is worth quite a bit. I have thought about getting the heated seat and would be interested in the opinions of anybody that has one.

I ahve one and I like it. Factory seat so easy to use. The R1150R never had one as option.
