Fueling Up Rant!
I absolutely hate fueling up my bike. The design of the gas cap and tunnel is so poor that it makes filling up the tank a frustrating and maddening experience. Inevitably, gas will splash out or overfill. And it’s always a roll of the dice if the pump I pick is easy to control or one that is a blaster. If it’s a hard to control pump, I can count on gas going everywhere. If cars were designed this way, there would be Congressional hearings and Congress would mandate a better design. What a p#@@ -poor design. Literally, I hate stopping for gas, I dread it every time.
Thanks, I needed that. I feel better. (At least until I fill up again!)

Yes, it seems that most gas stations/pump designs don't take motorcycles into consideration.

Re: Fueling Up Rant!
Personally I stick the gasoline nozzle in the tank just to the bottom of the fill tube and pump untill the fuel is to the top of the fill tube (the one that extends a 2 to 3 inches down from the filler top). I don't find it to be a problem.
Now if you are talking about filling my 82 911.....that is definitely a trying experience...........

I've never noticed it being a problem.
Do you hold the nozzle up above the hole in the filler thingy?
Or maybe you found one of those Mongolian gas stations like in Long Way Round?

Re: Fueling Up Rant!
Are you using California gas pumps? Cause I am!!! They are horrible! The spill-proof sleeve around the nozzle that works fine for cars, but makes it very difficult to fill up a bike.
Re: Fueling Up Rant!
I just put the nozzle in far enough to reach the bottom of the fill neck, as boxermania does, then tip the nozzle back towards me to leave plenty of room for the fuel to enter the tank without splashing back, usually letting the fuel fill towars the right side of the tank. I do live in California, I don't have to many problems with my technique, however you do find a station sometimes where it is a hassle due to the vapor recovery system, so maybe you need to look for another station to fuel from.

I got one of these

It definitely helps. but you still need to be a bit careful with getting the nozzle to point to left or right to avoid the metal divider in the middle. The little bag attaches perfectly between the handlebar clamps. And it's $20, so not a huge investment. I got the "Sportbike" version.

Re: Fueling Up Rant!
I've been away for awhile so now's here's my reply.
I've just started riding an oilhead after 30 years on airheads, the last 4 bikes being either R80G/S's or R100GS's. To fill up on those is a simple matter of popping off the gas cap, sticking in the pump nozzle, and fillering 'er up! No worries about a recessed filler neck or holding the nozzle just so. And!!! I could fill the tank up all the way to the top!
What frustrates me about the R1150R is the loss of capacity. Sure I can pump until the fuel hits the bottom of the filler neck, but what a waste of space. If I try to squeeze in a little more fuel, forget it. Squirts all over my tank.
I just don't understand why it can't be a simple design. Modern technology or older simplicity.
Airheads - Simple by Design! But don't get me wrong, I love this bike, just hate fueling it up!

If you would like to fill the tank without the problem your dealing with and to get a little bit more fuel in the tank when you need it, check Cyclerob's post " Fueling your tank at the Pump" do a search you will find it easy to do and it could be worth more fuel on those long trips.

Never had that problem in the Philippines. I just yell "fill her up" then pay the money and ride off. Why dont you try that next time and see how it goes. It works for me.
