hello..i will be going on a long trip this spring and would like to know what is a good tire
that will give me the mileage for the money...thank you (rear tire)

My pick will be the Michelin Pilot Road 2.....you'll have to shop for price as they are generally around $180

I got 15k out of my Pirelli Diablo Strada. I just bought another from Motorcycle Superstore. I'm pleased with them.

FWIW, I still have a pair Pilot Roads. It's my second set, they perform well, commuting and cross country. I can only assume the Pilot Road 2's are a better tyre. I've also had good experience with Metzlers.

Don't skimp on yer rubber, and check 'em several times daily on long trips.

I have thought about this at length and made some guesses as to why there's such a difference between riders regarding tire life. Here's my thoughts. Most of the people I see with low mileage live in warm climates, make long rides and enjoy corner strafing. My riding is mostly commuting. Short rides, cold wet weather and little opportunity for aggressive riding. I think my tires hardly have time to warm up properly on most of my rides. Could be that tire temperature is the issue. Not every time though. DJ does hard warm weather riding and gets pretty long wear from his tires.

I do like to take long rides and probably without exception my rears wear out from highway riding. (tread gets flat or squared off) I don't get the twisties as much as I'd like. I've run Michelin Macadam's (came on my 03) Dunlop D220's (like them very well) Pilot Road's (they were ok but didn't feel as secure on a tight curve as did the 220)

My favorite has been the D220. I'm not a tire authority by any means. I've never run the myriad of tires that many have but simply found one I like and I have pretty much stayed with it. I get 8 to 10K out of a rear and probably 10 to 12K on the front.

15k miles is exceptional and I would think you are the President of that league. I would also think that you weight 6 pounds wet and inflate the tires with nitrogen to 100 psi.

I would look at the Pilot Road 1, too. The Pilot Road 2 is probably a little stickier on the side, but the dual compound tires usually did not put a harder rubber down the middle. Remember that they are in the business of selling tires.

15k is almost double what I have ever had out of a rear tire. I would agree that cold commuting is probably easy on the tires, but would add that different road surfaces from around the country would also have some affect too.

In one of my previous lives I published an underground newsletter called "Compressor Stall" critical of company management policys under the pseudonym of Airman. But the actual name was adopted from another source. This is more than you want to know, but you did ask. Back at my old employer we worked on airplanes. As far as we were concerned the company was divided into two groups, aircraft technicians, and everybody else, with us being you know, the higher life form. Well that attitude rubbed some people the wrong way and one of the ground support leads started referring to all technicians as, Airmen. It was intended as an insult of sorts, but I kind of liked it and over the years started using it as an internet identity. I used to be pretty careful about using the name in any connection to aircraft maintenance because at one time some managers were pretty hot get their hands on that airman guy because of the newsletter. And.. I may have initiated some misunderstandings with airline people over the years using the name. Anymore, I only use the name in motorcycle circles. (Practically the only forums I frequent these days)
