Just another test ride victim...

Post by Ashveratu »

It was a beautiful morning and I had nothing better to do with myself since I had just finished work. (I work nights) I decided "what the hell" and took a ride down to the closest BMW shop. I had never really looked at BMWs up close and in person but I have always been interested in and admired the bikes from afar. My bike that I owned at the time was a 2007 Triumph Speed Triple that was paid off and had lots of mods done to her. No reason to get of rid her, until I took the R1200R out for a test ride......
After lurking on this forum for a bit and doing alot of reading, I have finally decided to come out and say HI!
I have already joined the BWM MOA and I am making plans to attend the International Rally in July. I will be riding up from South Florida.
Here are some pics of the old and the new:

Welcome to the victim's club! 8)
I was also a test ride victim back in January. I suggest getting some sort of crash bars. People suggested them to me...I got them....after i dropped the bike. #-o
Low speed, just a few minor scrapes on the right side valve cover, but still.

Welcome!

Both great bikes, but that R12R sure looks great in white.

Welcome, I'd like to hear a comparison , what you like better or worse about both the R1200R and the Speed Triple. I have always lusted after a Speed Triple.

Congrats. I was on a 1050ST prior to the BMW. Nothing but good rides on my Triumph(s), but I absolutely fell in love with the R.

Cheers!

Congratulations. I test rode the Speed (and Street) triple before switching from R1150R to R1200R (test ride victime here as well  ). Had read a lot of very good comments on the Triples though was quite dissappointed when I finally went for a test ride - nowhere near as good riding as all the test reports said. Or would that be because I was so used to the Boxer engine that it takes me longer to adjust to the Triple than a one hour test ride?

With celticus: would love to hear your comparison!

Have fun, teh R1200R is a awesome bike

I sold my Triumph Scrambler after test riding the R12R. I'm not sure if I would have made the switch from a triple. The Scrambler had no power (looked and sounded good though). I've heard some BMW folks have defected to the Tiger.

Welcome to the Victims Club. I got hooked about a month before the official release date after I happened to ride by the local shop and saw them unpacking the bike. Took it on a 40 mile test ride after court that morning , and surrendered the credit card for a deposit about 5 seconds after I got back to the dealership. You will absolutely have a blast on this machine !

Ashveratu welcome and cogratulations, as we all say, you will love this bike.

Unfortunately, you are yet more proof that as a species we are not very smart. We keep warning you folks that test rides are terminal yet you still take them, with predictable consequences. Why doesn't anyone heed our warnings?

Being even less smart, I bought mine before the test ride. Best bonehead move I've made yet!

Enjoy.

Well guys and gals....add another victim to your ranks. Went for the test ride today....the test fleet did not have the R1200R with the low seat. The dealer ordered one in so that I could ride the bike. (awfully nice of them don't you think)

Once we returned from the ride, when asked what I thought...my answer was "where do I sign?"

A nice 2009 Biarritz Blue Metallic R1200R will be in my garage in a couple of weeks...

Thanks for putting up with all my questions over the last little while

Mortorcycle_Girl,

Cograts, it's a wonderful bike, you'll enjoy it. I seem to have accumulated a fleet of two and four wheelers over the last few years and without a doubt the ones still under warranty make me sleep easier. Not to mention the peace of mind that knowing the complete history of the bike brings. New is good!

Congrats Motorcycle Girl and Ash!

Ash- Saw your S3 at 441 Cycle in Ft. Lauderdale yesterday and wondered who had traded it in and what for? Lo and behold I see your old and new bike on this forum. I'm on a Sprint and love the R12 but also enjoying the Sprint. I'm definitely awaiting an update on your ownership experience. White is a beautiful color.

So is the blue Motorcycle girl. ;)

The Triumph Speed Triple is a really solid bike with great throttle response and a bullet proof engine. It has an almost harsh yet refined delivery of raw power and seems to be barely contained. It handles pretty well, just a little effort needed to make her drop into a corner, where as the R1200R seems to know where you going before you do. I decided to trade her in because A) the R1200R handles and feels much better than the Triple (and I prefer that over horse power) and B) the R1200R has more comfort and options. I am planning on doing some cross country riding soon and there is no way I can do that on the Triple. If I had the garage space, I would have kept both bikes.
