New look

Here are a couple of shots of the new mirrors my R just got for Christmas. I decided last fall just before putting the bike away for the winter that I was going to ditch the Z Technik screen and go with the painted Sport screen. Good decision. But looking at the bike parked with the new screen, it really reminded me how ugly the stock mirrors are in my mind. Looked at Rizoma, but oh, the price. Then while visiting Gateway in St Louis, I looked hard at the mirrors on the 800 GS. When I got back home, I went to my local dealer, Cyclewerks in Barrington,Il, and we swapped mirrors on bikes on his floor. That was it. Ordered a set and got them on yesterday. I know alot of you like the ST mirrors, but I love these. Lower than the stock mirrors, oblong vs round, and I can actually see my rear turn signals even with the mirrors angled out. Half the price of the Rizoma...watta ya guys think ?

Beautiful Mike. What did the mirrors cost? Looks like a good option for all of us wanting a little more in the way of good looks for our bikes. Although it IS sort of hard to trust someone who's garage is so danged neat.

Thanks for the comments, and Mark, that's my shed, not garage !

The garage is a lot cleaner and currently is housing my GS. As for the mirrors, they ran me $ 115.00 for the pair. You don't need to order the compression fittings because you can re-use the ones on the bike. It looks like it will be another month or so before I have a chance to get the bike out and really try them out, but on the bike in the showroom we put them on, my parts manager was standing about 15 feet straight behind me and with the mirrors angled out, I could still see him. I'm hoping the lower height of the mirror coupled with the different profile will give me an even clearer airflow. That would be the icing on the cake.

I use that for headlight adjustments...saves having to loosen the bolts.

The GS mirrors look great. I was under the impression they didn't fit the R12R.

Bolted right up. I did get the fittings that go with the GS mirrors, so that tells ya they will bolt right into the stock handlebar mounts. BMW sells the mirrors 2 ways, one has the mirrors and the compression fittings, and then just the mirror separately. I don't know why, and my parts guy couldn't figure it out either, but BMW uses one mount on the handlebar, but uses a multiple cambination of compression fittings to screw into it, all the same size. Go figure.

Mike,
I love the new mirrors. I'd wondered if the 800GS mirrors would slot onto the R but it was all a bit too hard for my local dealer to spend a few minutes doing what your dealer was happy to do. I'd given up trying to figure it out, but now thanks to you, I have to go and spend more money. Yippeeee!

Hmm.. your new look has got me wondering. Should I go with the K1200R mirrors or the 800GS mirrors? They both look mighty fine. Great looking bike, btw.

If the F800 falls, which as a dirt/street bike it is likely to do, the mirror will rotate in the compression fitting (which is a bit like a drill chuck), reducing the likelihood it will break compared to the threaded mount of the R12R.

According to my dealer and the BMW parts fische, the R12R mirrors are mounted with compression fittings as are 800 GS mirrors. If you want your mirrors to rotate, just back off on the nut a bit. As for mounting the new mirrors, I screwed in the bottom part on the compression fitting into the handlebar first, then slid the mirror shaft in and then tightened the compression fitting. The threads on the female piece that is bolted to the handle bar are pretty fragile and I didn't want to run the risk of cross threading them.
