Hey, where did motorcycle rear fenders go to while I was asleep? And why?

what are our options except for the carbon fiber? Not sure it would be worth the price.

Public demand killed them, really. Most people don't want a big fender "going all the way to the ground". So the manufactures replied in kind making them much smaller.

The problem with the huggers are they don't keep the water off your passengers back or the rear of the bike.

Considering the minority who rides a motorcycle as a means of transportation and the large number of people who ride them purely recreational it's no surprise they are deemed as not needed, it's cheaper for the manufacturer, and it's apparently also fashionable. What bothers me is that BMW doesn't even offer a plastic part as an option.

This is one of my pet peeves. I hate the no-rear-fender look. It's probably the main thing I don't like visually about the R1200R, though it's hardly unique to that bike. My previous bike was a Bonneville and it's not too unusual for Bonnie owners to remove the rear fenders. Completely ruins the look of that bike in my opinion.

It's one more reason why I find myself attracted to Harleys. They have rear fenders.

My Ilmberger CF hugger does a fine job of keeping the water off of my wife. I like the looks of it and have learned to live with the price. Was easy to mount also.

As for the stripe up the back of the passenger, in addition to the hugger, I added a Wunderlich fender extender. Does the job. (Also put one on the front to reduce muck on the oil cooler).

Living on a dirt road (yes, I have a GS too), I am concerned that a hugger style rear mudguard would be too close to the tire and allow mud build-up (I got stuck once on an airhead that way!). I am looking more for something like the MudSling built by machineartmoto (http://www.machineartmoto.com) for the 12GS and F650/F800 GS twins, but not yet for the R12R. I corresponded with them this past winter after I got the R and they said they were thinking about it, but had not yet decided. Since they are located in Southern NJ, I even offered to ride down one of my trips there to provide a test mule. So far no sale I guess.

"Rip" and others: I just added a rear Extenda Fender from Wunderlich (thanks, ShinySide), at $45, and it looks like it will clean up some of the upward spray from the rear wheel that was getting on the license plate, top case, passenger etc. Be aware, though: the 3 original bolts will NOT fit, despite their instructions. I ended up mounting the Extenda behind the entire light/license plate holder, using three 2 1/2" quarter/twenty bolts, washers, and NyLok nuts. Now I just have to wait for rain, which, in Santa Barbara, means maybe next October...

I just added an Ilmberger that I had previously had on my HP2 Sport. It's a little wide 190 vs 180 but we'll see how it does. On the sport it didn't keep the spray off things like the license plate and it's holder.
