The next morning, I go to move the bike, and...no clutch. No pressure, none at all, yet if I stood the bike up I could see fluid in the window, although it looked a little low. Of course, the bike would not willingly go into gear.
So what happened? I take it this is the slave cylinder problem I saw mentioned on this forum time and again. I can't recall any hint of an impending failure. It was fairly windy, and I was wearing a full helmet and ear plugs, so maybe if there was grinding I wasn't hearing it? I certainly didn't feel anything. I stopped several times along the way and never a problem.
I called my dealership and the "local" dealership 90 miles away. Both opined that it was probably the master or slave cylinder. I had the bike trailered to Austin for them to diagnose the problem and will know something later in the week.
So is this what I get for buying a low mileage bike with minimal records (purchased a 2002 RR with just over 5000 miles last June)? The bike now has just under 11,000, and I had hoped for a "little" more mileage than this. I had changed all the bikes fluids when I bought it and have rode it regularly since, but before then my guess is the bike sat covered in a garage for far too long.
Is this an isolated issue, or have I bought into a whole lot of problems? Do I replace both the master and slave regardless of which has failed to prevent a second failure? Will the brakes go out next? I understand this is going to be a pretty costly repair with the bike getting torn down. Is there anything else I should consider doing while the bike is disassembled to save on labor costs and avoid future problems?
Now back home, but without bike, and needless to say none to happy about it--and worried about what I have gotten myself into.
