1100R Rear wheel bearing wear

Hi All,

Anyone know anything about replacing rear wheel bearings? My 2000 R1100R (31,000 miles) has some detectable play, not much, it's difficult to measure, but I'm guessing a couple of mm. Is it a dealer job to replace them? My Haynes manual says simply that they are part of the final drive housing and 'beyond the scope of this manual'. Hmm... Anyone got any experience of changing them, or bearing failure? Can I expect traumatic failure once a small amount of play is detected. Should I ask my wife to lose more weight and risk another kind of sudden trauma?

All contibutions (to the topic - well come to think of it to the cost of replacement too ;) ) welcome!

Cheers!

Looking for shiny specks on the rear drive drain plug magnet is a very smart idea.

Thanks - rather late, sorry!

My play turned out to be in the joint just before the bevel box. Two needle rollers replaced - like new!
