F800GS Vario Topcase on R12R

I bought my R12R in December, and being the middle of winter (if you can call our rainy season "winter") got the BMW side cases thrown in for free. They told me it was a BMW promotion, but I have no idea. Anyway, I was stoked about the cases right up until the moment I got them mounted on the bike, at which point I realized that my ass was now as wide as a truck, and lane splitting would be a problem.

Seeing as how I commute 100 miles a day, and lane splitting is pretty important, I decided I needed a different solution. A topcase was the obvious choice, but I hated the topcase that BMW has chosen to designate as "proper" for the R12R. Looking around, the GIVI and Shad cases looked okay, but required another key. Okay, okay, that's a minor quibble, but after seeing the glory that is one single key for the ignition and topcase locks, I was kind of hooked on the idea.

I was just about to give up when I spotted a very squarish-looking suitcase-like thingy on the back of an F800GS at my dealer. I thought it was kind of nice (although a bit small) and asked about it. The salesman's eyes lit up, and he opened up the suitcase, pulled a lever, and PRESTO! the suitcase expanded into a proper topcase. I thought that was about the coolest thing I had ever seen. Small and low-profile when you don't have much to carry, and enormous when you do.

Me: "I'll have some of that!"
Them: "But it doesn't fit your bike. It's only made for the F800GS".
Me: "Give it to me!"
Them: "No, really. It won't fit."
Me: "I'll make it fit. Gimme!"

Needless to say, I walked out of there with a topcase in hand. The mounting plate took another week or two, but did eventually arrive.

It turns out, like most of my big ideas, that this is a bit hard to make fit. The mounting plate for the vario topcase is about the same size as the rack that I already had on my bike, but the mounting method is completely different. I didn't want to stack the vario mounting plate on top of the rack, as that would have looked ugly and put the topcase up higher than it really needed to be. I opted to modify the metal portion of the vario mounting plate so that it would bolt down to the same mounting points as the existing rack. The fact that the metal plate didn't actually extend far enough to hit the forwardmost points was a minor inconvenience. I welded some "ears" on the corners in order to make a place for the forward mount bolts.

Now, I'd like to point out that calling me an incompetent welder would be an insult... to incompetent welders. I'm more like the incompetent welder's bumbling assistant. Please keep that in mind as you look at these pictures. Still, it's very strong and (now that I've added the webbing) very stiff as well. I'll ride around with it like this for awhile longer, then take it off and clean up the edges. Seeing as how it's not really very visible once the plastic is mounted on top, I can probably forego anything fancy like powdercoating. Maybe some simple rattle-can Krylon would do the trick.

Summary: It works, but you've got to really want it.

Looks Good

I used a Pelican 550 case....waterproof
Just bolted it to my carrier

I think the top case and mount plate was in the mid sixes. I had already purchased the rear rack in preparation for some kind of topcase, though I didn't know which one at the time and I don't remember how much it was. If the side rails that support the rear rack were available separately, that would reduce the cost a bit. Not sure if they are, though.

The rest was just labor and materials I had lying around the shop.

Forgot to mention: in addition to the vario gimmick (which makes much more sense when this case is mounted sideways, as a side case) this is actually a really nice case. It's fairly beefy and has a very nice interlock mechanism that gets hidden by the suitcase-like handle, which itself disappears into a slot and locks tightly with a key.

I'm very happy with this in daily use.

Nice work Jess, altho your welding reminds me of mine many years ago that I learned from a short course at a community college in order to make a tractor keep working. (I never welded again, and thus, the world is probably a much safer, and certainly a more beautiful place!)

I wanted to share my experiences with lane splitting, also daily in the Bay Area. At first, I was very concerned about the "wide as a truck" profile of the OEM side cases. My experience, however, is that my handlebars (or in my case, my bar end mirrors) are as wide as the cases. So, if the bars go through, so will the cases.

But it gets better: Since my bar ends have to clear the cars' mirrors, I actually have the extra room of the distance their mirrors stick out from their vehicles before my cases contact their door panels.

In practice, I've never bumped a side case lane splitting. Admittedly, I can't squeeze through the tight spaces where the rice rockets go, but that's mostly due to my wide bars vs. their clip-ons.

While I do have the top case (OEM, not as roomy as yours) I don't like it for daily commutes because a) the weight is up higher and b) I almost always kick it unless I contort my aging hip joint into a beautiful yoga/ballet/kung fu pose to get on and off the bike, which I do on the job many times a day.

Oh yeah, I DID have my side case clip the corner of a rear bumper one time as I was swerving around a car in ahead of me as he slammed on his brakes. Just a touch. Honest, officer, the bike CAME with that nice white paint stripe on my black case. Just the left one. It's a German design thing. Clever how they got it to fade in and out like that.
